I bought this ruler for my hand stitching tray. It is small enough and handy to do what it is made for without me having to deal with a bigger bulkier ruler.

In regular piecing, you sew the seam, then trim 1/4". In paper piecing, you trim your seam allowance first, using this INCREDIBLY HANDY & INEXPENSIVE RULER to cut your 1/4" seam allowance. You line up your 2 pieces (right sides together) using the seam you've just trimmed as your guide, and you sew your seam following the line on the pattern.The 1st videos I watched to learn to paper piece had me holding up the pattern to the light to see where to place the next piece, & it wasn't much fun. I LOVE paper piecing with this method because it's so easy to get perfect points.So here's the method in a little more detail: Print or trace your pattern--let's say a flying goose block. Pin your "goose" to the back of the pattern (right side up). Fold back your pattern along the first line you're going to sew. (Most people use an index card to help them make the fold quickly.) Take this INCREDIBLY HANDY & INEXPENSIVE RULER, & slide it right up against that folded edge. The ruler has a 1/4" lip that catches against the fold. Cut the seam. Fold the paper flat. Take your next piece (the "sky," for example) & line it up with the cut you've just made, holding right sides together, same as always. Flip the pattern over, sew across the line."Open" the 2 pieces, so you see the right side, & iron (or finger press) them into place. Use a card to fold your pattern back along the next sewing line. Use the ruler to trim your next seam allowance. Line piece 3 up with your cut. Sew along the line. Open & press. Fold on the sewing line. Use the ruler to trim your seam allowance. Line piece 4 up with your cut. Sew.You can use a quilting ruler to visually line up a 1/4" cut, but--honestly--being able to just bump this baby into place & getting perfect cuts every time makes this my #1 bang-for-my-buck quilting tool.
