This product can't be used with tannin rich water - which I only discovered AFTER I bought it. £100 wasted. I've given it 1 star only because I can't give none.

Bought this for a 3-day, 36 mile hike/militia training event I had last month. Worked great, filtered all the water needed for myself and my battle buddy. One thing I'll mention to is water source quality DRASTICALLY affects how quickly this will filter. Our whole trip we were in wetland marsh environment and there was water everywhere but it was all super dirty and disgusting. I tried pre-filtering for sediment with a bandana but it didn't seem to help so I gave up on that. Water quality post-filtering was great, including flavor. Removed all the nasty rotting organic matter taste sometimes left by other filters even though they make the water safe to drink. But it was god awful slow with that poor quality source water. It was taking 90 to 120 seconds per press using quite a bit of pressure, and we were doing 5 or 6 presses at a time to refill our hydration bladders. All in all a great product and I look forward to getting out using it more, but I'm gonna stick to my sawyer mini for my actual duty ruck for size, weight, and speed reasons.

When i received the product, i filled the outer refill container with tap water, then tested it to see how much ppm it contained, the value was 284 ppm on my digital tester. I then pressed it according to the instructions that came with the GeoPress purifier and then tested the water again, the reading was 327ppm.I emptied the container then repeated the process. The tap water's reading was 281ppm, before pressing it and after pressing it tested 285ppm.In contrast, a 1.5l Zephyrhills bottled water tested 175ppm and a small 500ml Zephyrhills bottled water tested 125ppm.The third time i tested my GeoPress it yielded the same 285 ppm prior and after the test for TDS.I am currently unable to validate whether it removes viruses, bacteria and protozoa and it never claimed to remove calcium and or magnesium from the water, which i theorise might be some of the tds as it is filtered through limestone rock before it reaches the reservoir.Overall, solid product, i would definitely buy again, just a little disappointed it doesn't filter into the under 200ppm range.

Update: After using this for some time as an every day water bottle for work, using potable water from the water cooler with the ability to purify if needed, I found one more issue. The threads between the lid and bottle are horribly inadequate. The lid gets bumped off if it's even somewhat bumped hard. Can only imagine how easily they would come off in the field. Could have very easily been a 5 star product. I wanted it to be. After seeing many positive review videos on YouTube, I decided to drop the nearly $90 on one and see for myself. I took it to a local river and gave it a try. Took right around 8 seconds like they claim and the water looked perfect. I was thrilled at that result. I wanted to try it again because I could not believe that clean safe water was so easy to get in the outdoors. The second time I did it was a much different story. The water did come out clean and safe and I had no reservations about drinking either sample. However, on the second try, it took almost a minute to complete the process. Way longer than their 8 second claim. As part of that claim, on the box it was touted as up to 5L per minute capacity, which would make it good for a shared system to fill up multiple containers quickly. After the first cycle, it won't even do 1L per minute. It will make water safe, I have no doubt about that as I drank both samples and had no ill effects. Also it is fine for just needing an occasional 24oz of clean water here and there. However, if you require more than 24oz of clean water at one time, there are many more alternatives that live up to their claims on flow rate. Even more so if you are willing to spend the nearly $90 that this system costs.

I bought a grayl filter one year ago to provide me with clean drinking water while at work. I am on a flight crew that travels international and domestic US. Quite often I found myself running out of work provided bottled water and worried about the quality of the hotel or airport drinking water I found. This filter totally alleviated this problem. I have used it on water taken from many places you would not normally want to drink from. I have made coworkers gag as I scooped water out of a dirty mop sink in the bowels of an airport, in all cases the water that was filtered was clean and safe to drink. I use this filter weekly and it cuts down on the amount of plastic I go through.Likes: easy to use and makes clean water from almost any source.Dislikes: it pops open sometimes in my bag due to pressure changes in flight. I have learned that ifI keep it totally full of water it won’t pop open. Any air inside expands as aircraft cabin pressure decreases (climb in altitude) causing the filter to open a little and leak a bit. Water does not expand like air so the filter remains sealed tight when totally full. Not really a big deal but it is a surprise when it happens the first time. I also find it best to pour from the filter into a cup rather than drinking directly from it. Backwash from my mouth can introduce bacteria and necessitate more frequent cleaning. By pouring into a cup I can go a week without having to disassemble and wash the filter. This review was triggered by the purchase of a second grayl filter that I will keep at home in case of emergencies. The filter is expensive but it works.
