Bad product. Buyer beware. Purchased an APC 3000VA Smart UPS with SmartConnect, SMT3000RM2UC Rack Mount and unit failed within 1 month after installation. Alarm Event Code: P.17 (Bypass Relay Weld fault). Contacted APC support (case #109355033) and performed "Brain Dead" procedure but error P.17 continued. Support recommended replacing defective unit. RMA #01863120 initiated. Initially they said 3-5 days, but it has been 3+ weeks and no word from APC. I contacted APC several times requesting a status update and all they would tell me is WE will contact YOU once we have a tracking number. After a few weeks I requested the issue be escalated to an APC manager but there has been no contact whatsoever from anyone at APC. I've asked repeatedly why 3-5 days has suddenly turned into 3+ weeks but no answer from APC. I won't buy APC UPS units for my customers ever again. Product works well until it fails, then give up all hope of getting it replaced in a timely manner.

This unit failed within 4 months with a p17 error. When you receive a p17 error; the unit won’t pass power to devices, the unit won’t power on, the unit requires executing a dead brain reset which requires partial disassembly. The p17 error is an (undocumented) “Bypass Relay Weld fault”. This typically implies an internal hardware fault.Once a tech sees that there is indeed a failure, they will initiate an RMA. A new device is supposed to show up in 3-5 days. If you happen to not have a backup UPS, that’s at least 3-5 days of downtime. You then get to repack your old device yourself, and bring it to a UPS store yourself. I would have at least expected them to do pickup.Additionally, the Schneider online smart connect portal they want you to pay a subscription for to use is absolute garbage. Pay the extra money for the dedicated network card.Overall, would not buy again (and I have two of these). I understand that things fail and more than likely there is a bit of bad luck here. But at this price point, I can pay a few hundred dollars more for an Eaton or something similar and not have it fail in 4 months. A UPS is not supposed to be your single point of failure!

I have been using APC UPS' for over 25 years. I do think they are one of the better UPS brands. That said, this is the first time it took more than a few hours to get one installed and configured. It took 6-8 hours over 2-3 days plus a few "extra" hundred dollars for an "old style" apc network card. Long story short, the UPS came with Smart Connect, an apc cloud based mgt. service I had not used before. It is programmed to use a local internet port labeled Smart Connect. 1st thing needed was to update the firmware to get it working. (Smart Connect website had a msg to update the FW if there were connection problems and this unit could not connect). I attempted serial and usb to update the firmware with limited success (I got the FW up one rev. using the serial port and pTTY). Then I bought a "Network Card 2". Suddenly it was like old times. Got it up and configured within 1-2 hours. I was going to blow off the Smart Connect but I can be stubborn, so I started again using the new network connection. After searching thru .ENC firmware files at APC and the APC Knowledge base I located an executable FW file, "apc_hw05_aos664_sumx664_bootmon108" that I was able to run on a laptop across the LAN to the UPS. Interesting thing is it took the firmware from UPS 03.5 to UPS 03.5 (ID1015). Then I re-registered the UPS at Smart Connect and, viola, connection made. Not much fun but maybe this will help others. Also I will acknowledge, maybe I could have called APC support and got it done sooner, but after 25 yrs why should a support call be needed to configure a new UPS?...stubborn hmmm
