I am brand new to mesh systems as of this unit. I am very involved with technology and have built a server and several computers for my personal house, as well as the computers for all of my immediately family members. Up until recently I never put much stock into changing the router in our house, but when remote work became more of the norm, the bandwidth in our area plummeted. I searched all over for means of solving the issue and eventually settled on this mesh WiFi system after literal days of research. Some say that XT9 system is not that good for punching through walls, but this is false in practice. We live in a 1600sqft house with a lot of walls. We have the main router set up in our living room on the eastern wall, and then the secondary node set up on the western wall. The signal coming from this device is astonishing. No dropped signal anywhere in our house. I can even walk to the back of our property and still get signal, which was impossible before.I cannot recommend this device any higher. This is where I will end the main review. If you decide you want to purchase this device please read below. When I got this device initially setup I was having a connection issue to our router. I bought these used instead of new, which I did not think would be an issue. The light on the front should glow blue when connecting to internet, and then switch to white when fully connected. The lights on both units were red. I called both our ISP and Asus at 5am in the morning when I setting up these units. Ultimately, the person at my ISP was the one who figured out the issue. The units were still trying to connect to the IP from the last owner, which means that my IP, which was clearly different, was not being recognized. On the bottom of the device is a small pinhole with the word “Reset” written above the hole. After sticking a pin into both the main unit and secondary node they finally started flashing blue before turning white and connecting. This is an issue that not even the rep from Asus was able to figure out. If you are having a similar connection issue, then please make sure to try resetting the units as I mentioned above, but once you get your units working never press this again unless you want to set up your system again from scratch. The reset button removes all settings and stored information on the units. This will remove your account information, setup information, passwords, and even configured orientation.

My review of the XT9’s after setup and about a day of use.Pros:*Easy to set up but it helps very much if you know what you are doing. This is a consumer grade router but there are some quirks in getting it set up properly. Nothing that cannot be overcome.*Expensive but relatively better price point of $350 on sale versus otehrs if you want WIFI 6 and the ability to customize and not pay fees like you would if you went with another mesh system such as Netgear Orbi or eero. You get parental controls, firewall etc. VPN server and USB drive storage capability without further payment. The feature set is highly important IMO.*Customization via the app, which I think is very good. And there are so many more tweaks you can make by logging into the router via a browser. I’m migrating to a mesh system for the first time from a Netgear R7000 that bit the dust after years of service and wanted at least the same level of customization that router had. I got way more than expected from ASUS.*Another reason I went with ASUS is the ability to turn off automatic firmware upgrades and to revert to past versions. This was the norm a decade ago but from I have read is not longer possible with almost all other manufactuers.Cons:*This is more specific to my own case. My daily driver is a 4 year old ThinkPad workstation notebook using the Intel 9560 WIFI card. While in the past INTC represented that the card is compatible with WIFI 6, they did so before release of the final standards. At present, INTC does not list the card as AX compatible. I only know all of this after much research because I was getting connection dropouts on my ThinkPad (despite another 10-year old ThinkPad using a Centrino WIFI card would not get dropouts!) and thought the issue was the router. It did not help that ASUS placed an insert in the box stating that upgrading drivers for all INTC 9000 series WIFI cards is necessary for proper use with the XT9’s. That is true to some degree because the throughput, especially on the 5Ghz band was really fast, approximating 85% of the 1GB speed I get from my ISP. However, that was at the expense of disconnects seemingly randomly and but also following configuration changes to the router. I prefer stability but by turning off AX the throughout you will get is no faster than any other AC router. In fact, I compared it to a TP Link Archer A7 AC 1750 that costs like $50 on AMZN and the speeds were about the same.I also suspect some of the complaints attributed to the XT8 series (especially given its release date) may be due to incompatibility rather than the fault of the router. However, ASUS should disclose this rather than putting an insert in the box implying it will work flawlessly.Other Comments:Prior to recognizing incompatibility, I bound client devices to a specific band and also reserved IP address for almost all devices thinking that might be the cause for the disconnects. It is always good practice so I have not unwound that change. The router interface through a browser made it easy enough. So far, I am testing this with about 12 devices (phones, tablets, Google mini and some Wyze cams) connected. All but one are connected to the main router rather than the node (using the 2nd 5Ghz channel as a backhaul). I did have one disconnect from the node. Not sure why but the signal has been otherwise great. I did also change the channel for both bands after using a WIFI analyzer to check for crowding with my neighbors.I plan to move the XT9’s to another larger location where I will add more than 30 IOT devices and cams and that will be the real test of the ASUS systems. Will use MOCA adaptors to create a wired backhaul form node to main router. Will update later. One thing I will say is the ASUS speed test in its app shows speeds approaching 90% of my ISP speed of 1GB. The app shows service is provided by OOKLA. Yet when one goes directly to OOKLA (and FAST among others) the speeds are about 50 to 60% of that the ASUS app shows. Not sure if there is some intentional deception there.Build quality is hard to judge. I read two reviews where the top piece is a sticker and due to heat will remove after a short while. The units are plastic but so are all other routers out there. They come with a 2-year warranty if you are in the U.S.Rating:I initiate my review with a preliminary BUY rating (4 stars) given relative ease of setup (for those familiar with router configuration), no need to pay recurring fees after purchase, and stability after discovering the reason why I had initial problems. If the XT9’s perform well with more devices attached, I will upgrade my rating.Update: The Intel 9560 is 160Mhz compaible but not AC compatible. I turned on the 160Mhz for both 5Ghz bands and was able to get speeds approximating 80 plus % of my ISP package speed. System ran totally stable. I then upgraded the firmware to the 5/15/2023 (latest) release. Ssystement remained fast and stable. Am very pleased with the ASU XT9's and not sure why all the complaints. There are some tweaks which I did, that you are not going to be able to do with other router brands, such as turn off auto channel, bind to a specific AP and reserve IP addresses. I believe all of thesse implementations add to stability.Update: Upon feedback from those who use the ASUS mesh systems, I unbound all phones and tablets and let DHCP do its works rather than reserving an IP address for those devices. The system performs equally well. Totally satisfied with the XT9's so far. Reiterate BUY rating but I think a good purhcase points is at $350 rather than $400 (have seen even higher at an AMZN competitor). At that level, you are verring into ET12 territory IMO.Update: So I now have 42 devices connected inluding 5 POE cams, and 2 APs. No drops on anything, everything is fast. This is off limited Internet given use of a 5G modem too. Going to try wired backhaul next using MOCA adaptors. Upgrade to STRONG BUY.Update: Reiterate BUY rating. The XT9 mesh system continues to perform. Firmware is very stable.Update 4/29/24: Installed latest Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388_24609 w/o any issues. Mesh runs smoothly. The MOCA idea didn't work for me but that was due to my home's cabling so not sure of the interplay with the router had I not had cabling issues. Been using the WOL features of the XT9's and it works great. Considering adding another node but one pack is pricey. Reiterate BUY Rating.5/24/14: To expand coverage I bought another 2 pack, using one for my home and the other for a business. Having 2 nodes work great. Did notice some disconnects on the nodes and seems to be associated with roaming devices. After binding the devices didn't notice any issues at all. Someting that needs furhter investigation. It could be the nodes need more seperation. Will say the 5Ghz band gives me at least 789Mbs on 1Ghz fiber.

Updated 10/24‐---------------‐--After hard reset both router and node. I swap device node now becomes Main router, it seems to taken care of dropping ISP speed, i am able to get max bandwidth from my ISP modem (1.4Gbps Xfinity). However, the Node seems to be still dropping and freezes internet connection(20ft away from 1st/2nd floor). It shows connected but no internet (lost internet signal).I finally forced myself to use MoCA since Xfi modem XB8 built in. My node now no longer disconnected and received full speed.Overall, my suggestion that if you are able to use MoCA on your setup then should do it because it better/stable for Wifi (Ethernet dedicated backhaul)I am using GoCoax MoCA 2.5. Hope that helps.----------‐-------------------I am an IT professional and using all model of Asus products for years.Unfortunately, this XT9 is a terrible device since the 1st day regardless what I did try to address the problems... Long, short..The Node keep disconnecting randomly after a few days. The device still connected but no ip address giving. (This is new problem for me)The Major problem since the 1st day is the internet speed only half from ISP modem (I have 1.5gpbs internet speed). XT9 only giving me 700-800Mbps regardless I am using CAT5e,6,7,8. The WAN port on the XT9 should be 2.5Gbps.Do not buy this, it will create problems for you. May be time for me to buy a different brand and quit Asus.I am very disappointed because this 2pk XT9 is expensive.

I just upgraded to the XT9 from the Eero devices and it is like going from riding a bicycle to driving a sports car, the features, tools and capabilities are extensive. The setup is pain free and simple, similar to most wifi mesh systems you would buy today. After the initial setup is where you get the ability to fine tune your network. Asus has an excellent Web app called Asusrouter, that has an extensive set of features and parameters that you can use to customize your network to your specific requirements.I am currently running a Public IP network connected to my provider and it was very easy and straight-forward to set up after getting the Public P addresses. I worked with my provider to get their side set up and then configured my end. Works really well and the speed is exactly what I am paying for, the XT9 does NOT limit the speed or features of my service at all.The coverage that Asus promises is also realistic. I have the 2-device package that covers 5700 sq ft and it really provides that wide coverage. I have the node setup in my garage and the main router in my office and all 42 of my devices are connected with excellent signal strength on each device. It is nice to be able to connect everything and not worry about where in the house, yard or garage we go, we have excellent coverage. In summary, what I like most about the ASUS ZenWiFi XT9 AX7800, is the Web App that gives you the ability to customize your network to your specifications and the fact that it provides real time monitoring of the devices and has extensive logs. I am also very happy with the wide coverage area it provides and the strength of the signal. I had a lot of problems with signal strength before installing the Asus, and that is now resolved.I recommend this product and I did not get it free or in a promotion.UPDATE 10/18/2023This is an update to give a complete review of not only the product but also Support. I have had the opportunity since installing the devices to talk and email support. Be aware that the Support organization is not very good. I have spoken 3-4 times with agents in the Network support area and they were not very skilled or knowledgeable of the product and how it works or is supposed to be configured. I also sent an email about 4 days ago and still have not heard anything back from them.I still give this product 5 stars, because of both the web and mobile app, but beware that if you need support it may not be there for you.

My Orbi RBR50 main router decided to give up the ghost, so I decided to "upgrade" to the ASUS XT9 system. It was tri-band and had a 4-core processor in each node. Great! Well...not so much. I originally only purchased the 2 pack and found that the signal strength was much less than the 2016 Orbi. I wound up buying another XT9 to cover what my old system had easily covered. All nodes were shown as having "Great" signal to the main XT9. After getting all firmware updated, everything configured and thinking that everything was good to go, I then noticed that some of the devices would disconnect and then reconnect. These are not remote devices. These are devices that are in the same room as the XT9 main router...which doesn't even have to connect across the 160Mhz backchannel. Rebooted. All is well! Well...for the moment. Later in the afternoon, I was on a Teams meeting and suddenly no one could hear me. Thinking it was my headset, I was fumbling around with it and they said I was breaking up (audio-wise). I ended up taking the call on my phone via cell instead. During this time, all devices on the network got their internet access disconnected...and then about 30-45 seconds later, the internet would be reconnected. I thought....oh, it's the internet service. Nope. It was the new XT9 setup. Researched around and found many others having the same issue (even on the snbforums and ASUS forums). They ended up needing to disable many of the features that I purchased the XT9 for. It was slower and less capable of handling more devices (of which I have 53). At that point, why would I want this setup? I wouldn't. It is going back. The Good:The features of this router mesh is fantastic. It has built in QoS, AIProtection, Parental controls built right in and without any extra charge (unless Orbi or TP-Link). You can tweak every setting possible. Something you can't do on an Orbi or TP-Link.It has a very nice web and app interface. I will miss this. The Bad:The range on these units is nothing of what I expected. I expected it to at least be the same of what my old Orbi system was. Not even close. I would need 3 to 4 XT9's to cover the same that 2 circa-2016 Orbi's did. And these aren't exactly cheap...Having to disable features of the mesh in order for it to work "as sold" is unacceptable. This is told by ASUS tech support. The Ugly:Having the system selectively just drop internet randomly is just something I can't live with. It is embarrassing to be dropped from a work Teams call. This is not a distance problem as my laptop is only 5 feet away from the main XT9 router. With this system running on the latest firmware (as of 09/19/2023), it shouldn't require a bunch of tweaking to get the system to just run at a lower capacity/speed. Other ASUS XT8/XT9 owners have the same type of issues...or they had to make special concessions to allow it to run properly. I need a system I can depend on to just work (for home and especially work)...and not be a downgrade from the original Orbi I purchased back in 2016.
