It's a low-cost WiFi7 router with the familiar Asus management tools. Works great and I don't have any issues with it. The one thing keeping it from a 5-star review is the low number of Ethernet ports, but you get what you pay for and a cheap network switch easily fixed that issue.

I’ve spent the last month with the ASUS ZenWiFi BD5 router, and can see why it was PC Magazines readers choice. It is delivered as one Master, and two Satellites though they all look identical. I used it to replace a 3 piece Deco router set. It was first configured as a AP behind an Arista Router / Firewall, and later as a Primary router restoring more of the Security features Asus provides. First off it’s a three pack, and had no problem covering our home with placements in the Den, Kitchen, and Primary Bedroom. It has dual 2.5G ports so it had no problem with a typical 1GB internet ISP. True WiFi 7, but does not have the WiFI 6e Triband Radio. Backhaul and front-haul is available from the satellite units. I used backhaul to get ethernet to a very demanding wireless business PBX, phone system and the router didn’t skip a beat. The router is administered with a WEB GUI interface, but there are also IOS apps available. Some of the simpler settings can even be controlled by Amazon’s Alexa. Unlike the Deco’s the BD5 allows you to specify channels and bandwidth for all radios, and cleaned up a lot of our interference problems. I was also able to configure multiple WiFi networks and ran a separate one just for IoT devices. I also configured one just for guests so we no longer have to give out our main WiFi password. As a router Asus adds Trend Micro Security, QoS, Parental Controls, Safe Browsing, and a number of VPN choices. The Trend micro AiProtection performs a Router Security Assessment checking for often overlooked security vulnerabilities and helping with corrections. There are built in Networking tools, system logs, and speed test for troubleshooting. You can even SSH into the router where you will find remnants of OpenWrt with a lot of Asus customizations. This is a prosumer device so I didn’t expect to find VLANS and such. While you can poke around, manual changes are not supported and would be overwritten if newer firmware is installed. I had two firmware upgrades in all three routers since installation, keeping the units security patched, and up to date.

I moved to this from a TP-Link Deco X20. The Deco was solid, but there are some security concerns about hidden backdoors so I needed an upgrade. I have not had many issues with stability or connectivity with this ASUS BD5 router which seem to plague other ASUS products (XT series for example). I am in a really small place so my routers are close together. I don't think any of our devices are roaming between nodes. We are moving to a larger place soon and I suspect the stability might suffer. Here are my main issues with this router:1. There is an app that you can use to manage the router. The problem is that the app does not have all of the settings the web does. This makes the app obsolete for me because I am tired of opening the app and hunting around for something that only exists on the web. Now, I just go straight to the web.2. The web interface has not been updated for many years. The layout and categorization does not make sense to me as it has grown organically over time. Settings are hard to find. An intuitive consistent interface for both app and web would be a welcome addition.3. You will have to tweak this to get stability and performance. I am constantly moving things around to get it to work. Almost all changes require a full reboot for some reason and it takes a really long time for the nodes to reconnect with this happens.4. The setup process was buggy. I changed the default subnet during the setup and that caused it to choke. I had to start over again. It took a long time and was frustrating.5. I monitor my router logs for anything unusual. I have this router dumping the output to a log server on my NAS. This router is constantly logging emergency and error level messages that make no sense and do not seem critical or an emergency. There are things like "PHYMODE: 38" or "Channel is already set," and even errors with no messages at all. The end result is that anything really important will undoubtedly get lost in this noise. My sense from this constant noise is that the code must be really sloppy.

I'm an IT professional. I was setting this up for a friend. I have a TP-Link Deco at home; I've had zero issues with it. The Fire TV 4K Max would not connect to the Asus Zen wifi with Wi-Fi 7, MLO, WPA2/3 enabled. It kept telling me the password was wrong, even though it was correct. It turns out that, even though WPA2/3 allows WPA2 supported devices, the Fire Stick (which doesn't support WPA3) won't connect to this router with security set to WPA2/3. But MLO, which allows automatic switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, will only work with WPA2/3, and not with WPA/WPA2. So, if you want all your devices to connect, use WPA/WPA2, but then all my devices connect to the 2.4 GHz band and won't use the 5 GHz, resulting in slower speeds. Disabling the 2.4Ghz band so that only the 5Ghz band would be used, resulted in none of the devices being able to connect. Also had 3 random reboots of the Asus Zen wifi out of nowhere.

Last Update 3/17/25 - BIG THANKS to the Amazon group helping work thru effort to replace this 2nd Asus router. Had Spectrum help confirm the wireless portion of this one was failing. Initially SEVERAL DAYS to get this functioning almost correctly, (read below) I've replaced it with a TP-Link unit AND IT ONLY TOOK 1 HR TO SET UP THE TP-LINK ROUTER.Update 2/5/25: IF you have older cameras or equip that only used WPA2 - DO NOT allow the router to select WPA3. Select WPA2 at initial setup and the older equip like Blink cameras can connect. (I had Blink on the phone for 1 hr and they couldn't figure it out.)For Windows 11 /10: Click in upper left corner on your profile Pic. Select NEW Profile, sign in. That's it. Use the new web page to go to the ASUS 192.168.50.1 (I had the ASUS rep I had for 30 min and they didn't know this either.) Then go back to your usual profile anytime.__________Earlier frustrated review below__________Asus rep agreed to return & assigned case #. Had Rep on phone for 30 min. Even after factory HARD reset. Can't get into Admin using Windows 11/10. There's a flash of 'sign in screen' but then cuts off after 1/4 sec. Tried 192.168.50.1, and asusrouter.com and asusrouter.com:8443 and router.asus.com. Can only connect to Admin thru android tablet and phone app. Signal strength seems weaker than old router that died. Need extender in office.New ASUS didn't like my Blink camera module. Blink Rep took 30 min just to get Sync module to connect. Still trying to get outdoor cameras on-line but still won't connect thru this unit.
