Works great and easy to use. Just make sure you let it acclimate for the 5 minutes the instructions say. Found the gas leak in 2 minutes.

Great instrument for occasional casual use. Quite slow to null out and stabilize but very sensitive. I used it to ensure minimal leakage on newly installed gas lines and it worked well. A bit too sensitive to work conveniently for verifying the propane connections in my gas grill but still quite useable for that.

Sensitive to natural gas leaks - even at levels you may not be able to smell. I did use it to check the quality of a repair and found that the repair work had not been done completely. Gas line repair person initially did not believe it but confirmed with his own equipment that he had not tightened one pipe clamp screw leading to the gas line meter adequately.USAGE TIPS -- It helps to turn it on *outdoors* far from where you think there may be gas leaking. It may squeal initially unless you turn down the sensitivity. I then turn the dial until I start hearing chirps. The level where the chirping start will drift for a few minutes: It takes about 4 to 5 minutes of warm up time to equilibrate - which seems normal for the kind of sensor used (not a defect). During that time, you will need to adjust the dial. Patience is needed but rewarded. Once stable, I set the dial so the instrument chirps about once every second. Then I proceed to the suspected leak listening for how often it chirps. It is very sensitive and if gas is detected, it increases in number of chirps per minute proportionally to the level of leakage (similar to a Geiger counter), then to "motor boating," and finally to a continuous squeal.Avoid banging the sensor (as it is reportedly fragile) or letting kids get grubby or sweaty hands on the sensor and it should give you longer service.

The price seemed to make this a worth-while purchase. When first turned on, the warm-up took several minutes, SCREAMING ALL THE WHILE! This one apparently does that during the warm-up; really annoying. I turned it off, and on several more times over a couple days, the final time it screamed for only 20 sec. That was still unbearable for me.Another problem I experienced with this is that it took a long time to adjust and achieve a steady gallop. I then walked around my place as it remained constant. Then I brought it to my door where the gallop slowed to a stop. I adjusted it again there to the required gallop. As I moved it back into the room, it sounded its alarm; my ambient air set it off. My gas company had just visited me about 2 weeks ago to do a routine residential gas-leak test and all was well.I readjusted it back to ambient air steady gallop, and tested it on my stove. Going at about 1"/sec. rate, there was about a 2 second delay to sound the alarm, and when it did sound, it was away from the source. I duplicated this scenario a few times with same results. The final negative property with this product is that after it detected the gas and was moved away from the source, it would take many (way too many; 5+) seconds to return to detection mode.In my opinion and experience with this product, it definitely is not worth any amount of money, which is why I returned it and am purchasing a more expensive and well-known one. I'm disappointed too because I liked the look and the price.

Just received my Extech EZ40 EzFlex and it works great. Opened the box read the instructions which are three pages. Installed three batteries that come with the device brought it to a gas free area to warm up and once ready tested it out.To make sure it was working I let some natural gas out of my stove and it detected it right away. I knew it was working! I then proceeded to use it for what I actually purchased the unit for which was to track down the location of a sewer gas leak which this unit is able to pick up because of the methane. As I entered the room with the problem the device started going off and when I put it by where I believed the source of the problem was the unit went wild. The unit comes with a nice case for easy storage and is built reasonably good. The thing I liked most about it was the ease of use; unpacked, prepped, and used within 15 minutes. I would recommend this device to anyone that has a need to track down any sort of combustible gas leaks. I even strongly recommend it for anyone with natural gas as well because this device allows for easy checking of all your pipes. It is cheap enough to purchase one so that you can check pipe fittings once a year.
