Shipping was very fast from this seller. This product is very nice compared to the other infrared thermo's out there. I really like the fact it has a rubber protector around the screen to protect it from scratching and also you can change the ems setting for different types of materials. The screen is very bright and very easy to read. The battery does seem to wobble a little when clipped in but doesnt affect operation. Feels really comfy in your hands and not too heavy. I also love the fact you get a hard case for it and not some cheap bag. I wish Dewalt would bring back there hard cases for there cordless tools. Im a big Ridgid fan when it comes to cordless tools but after seeing how nice the battery clips in on this Dewalt I think Im gonna switch over to them. Im an electrical contractor and will be using this on jobs which have been struck by lightning or had bad surges. After my first few times of using it I will update how it works.

What I wanted was something to check my 3-phase motors for hot spots and I couldn't justify (read afford) buying a $3,000.00 infrared camera. What I didn't want was a cheap no-name non-contact infrared thermometer that wouldn't be able to discern hotter spots on a warm, operating motor. After reading as many reviews on the DeWalt DCT414 as I could find, I decided that the one feature it had that the others in this price range lacked was the adjustable emissivity feature. Another feature I like about it is the 12:1 optics and its ability to scan for high or low temperatures. The thing that really sold me on it is that you can see if it works for you and send it back to DeWalt in 90 days for a full refund if you don't like it. With DeWalt standing behind like that, I figured I wasn't taking much of a risk by trying it.It seems reasonable to check it against temperatures I am familiar with but from what I've read it's hard to get a reading of 212F* from boiling water in a shiny pan. @.95 ems, boiling water read 210F*. I changed the ems to .93 and the temperature was less than 212F*. It read 212F* @.90 ems, ice read 30F* right out of the freezer @.90 ems. The chart says that water should be .93 ems, but I don't care what the ems reads as long as the temperature is right. A check of a shiny red aluminum can of soft drink in the refrigerator was 34F*. The cheap thermometer in the freezer read 2F*, the same as the DeWalt thermometer. A thermometer in another area of the house read 64F* and the DeWalt read 63.8F* @.95 ems.I like the fit and finish of the product. It feels comfortable in the hand and the laser points well. It appears to be well made and has a 12 volt rechargeable power supply. None of the other hand held thermometers I could afford had that feature. I bought mine from Amazon. It came with one 12V Max battery, a charger, a lockable hard protective case, free shipping and a free $25 gift card (look on the internet for DeWalt special offers). According to the instruction sheet, you can leave the charger plugged in and the battery in the charger all the time. DeWalt says the charger has a "tune up" mode to make the battery work longer per charge and have a longer life. There isn't an off button on the unit. You point and shoot, get your reading, release the trigger and it shuts off automatically in a few seconds. There's no worry about leaving it on and running the battery down before you're finished with it for the day. So far, it seems to be well worth the price I paid for it. The next test will be to take it to work and see if it's able to scan my motors like I think it should. Thanks to DeWalt's 90 day return policy I have plenty of time to make sure it will work for me. It's everything that I expected at a reasonable price. You can bet I will recommend this to my friends and other operators.Like anything else, it's not perfect. If I hold it in my hand and shake it I can hear a slight rattle. The battery does not fit up as tightly on the DCT414 as it does on my other hand tools. I don't think it will be a problem for me, but if things like that bother you I wanted to mention it.
