DMT Diamond Uniformity, Coverage, Surface Flatness

The DMT Difference

Diamond Uniformity, Coverage, Surface Flatness

DMT uses micronized monocrystalline diamonds, precisely sized for a more uniform diamond surface. No other diamond sharpeners offers micronized monocrystalline diamond and most offer the lesser grade poly-crystalline diamond. Mono-crystalline is like an ice cube made up of one particle holding its form while poly-crystalline is like a snow-cone made up of many small particles that get sheared off during use.

Coverage: DMT’s process assures the most diamonds per square inch in the industry providing a more durable sharpening surface.

Surface Flatness: DMT bench stones are engineered flat, assuring even contact with the knife or tool.

Choice of Diamond Surfaces

Interrupted or polka dot surface for which DMT is famous has slightly recessed holes that will collect metal fines (swarf) removed during sharpening to prevent loading. Fast sharpening action; not recommended for pointed or very small tools.

Continuous surface presents a more conventional looking sharpening surface. Fast sharpening action; able to use on small surface edges.

HardCoat, DMT’s newest proprietary surface, is able to withstand the rigors of ceramic sharpening, providing an even longer service life to the sharpener.

DMT Commitment

DMT is committed to providing the best diamond sharpeners in the marketplace. If the sharpener is found to be defective, we will replace it.

Benefits of The DMT Difference

  • Precise Diamond Sizing for Consistent Sharpening and Longer Life
  • Best Diamond Coverage for Longer-Lasting Service
  • Flat Surface for Even Sharpening
  • Choice In Diamond Surfaces
  • DMT Commitment- Replacement If Found To Be Defective

Care and Use of DMT Diamond Sharpeners

All models are designed to be used dry or with water so there are no messy oils and extensive clean up to worry about. Always clean the DMT sharpening surface after sharpening. Rinse surface with water and wipe dry. After several sharpenings, clean more thoroughly with a mild abrasive and brush; rinse surface with water and wipe dry.

Always put away dry and store in a dry environment. Use leafing (paper towels, cloth, plastic storage bag) in between your bench stones to prevent abrasive sides from rubbing.

About Sharpening with DMT

Get the Most out of your DMT Sharpener

There is a ‘break-in’ period for your diamond stone. Initially, it will feel especially rough but will smooth over time without impacting performance. Let the diamonds do the work; just light strokes with the edge to sharpen, same number of strokes each side. Approximately 5 or 6 strokes per side (depending upon condition of edge) compared to 30 strokes per side on a conventional stone, saving time and extending the life of the knife or tool. Start with a coarser grit for damaged or dull edges and work to finer grits. The work the edge is to do will help you determine the grit needed: Rough work, end with coarse grit (cutting cardboard); finer work, work through finer grits (food preparation).

  • Initial break-in
  • Light strokes to sharpen – let the diamond do the work
  • Faster than conventional sharpening methods
  • Rough work – coarser grit
  • Fine work – finer grit

Prima slijpsteen.

I own 4 DMT diamond stones. Unfortunately, everyone I have bought before this one has defects. I am happy with this stone though. My extra coarse stone is missing diamond coverage all along the edges and has a big blotch missing in one of the corners. My DMT fine stone has extremely bad grit contamination that you can not only feel, but can hear, when sharpening. So, I was happy when I finally got a DMT stone that didn't have grit contamination and has complete diamond coverage including along the edges. It is unfortunate that it took 4 stones to get a good one. To say DMT's quality control is subpar is an understatement. I kept seeing good reviews and so thought maybe I was getting lemons, just a random bad one. But no. Everyone stone except this one had significant defects. That being said.... even with the defects the stones work well enough and will last. I know it's odd to say so much negative and have a 5 star review. That is simply because this stone was exactly what it should have been. No grit contamination, no missing coverage and a great stone. It cuts fast and leaves a uniform scratch patter. It is well built and will last year's making it a great buy for $50. If you can get a DMT diamond stone without any significant defects, then you're getting a good buy. These stones will last for a very long time if you take care of them and can cut any steel type including super steels like s110v or s90v.

My stone had a manufacturing issue that I discovered after the return window had closet but DMT support solved it in an excellent way. I'm very happy with my stone and the support experience I had couldn't be better.Fully recommended!

Very good quality sharpening solution. I use it to sharpen plane irons and chisels and I've not seen the slightest sign of fatigue after several months of use. Guaranteed flatness, and no need for lapping... ever.To use, all that is needed is a small amount of liquid to lubricate (the manufacturer recommends water -- glass cleaner is another option with no adverse effects), then sharpen, then wipe off the slurry (the swarf is sign that it's working). The plate is quite heavy, but it helps keeping everything in place while sharpening. Let it dry and store it away. easy.I've found I can obtain results faster by applying very little pressure -- no need to force weight down into the stone to sharpen. There is a small break-in period, after which I started getting bluish halos (photo attached). It's a tell-sign cleaning is due, which can be done easily by a good scrubbing with a toothbrush and some kitchen/sink cleansing powder agent (such as calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate). The surface can also reportedly be cleaned with a high-polymer eraser. Even easier!Very responsive support from the manufacturer. Very satisfied customer! The prices for the coarse, fine, and extra-fine stones fluctuate somewhat, I'd recommend setting a watch.
