Completely useless driver tool. Can only be installed reproducibly with a bolt and jam nut.

As others have mentioned these are of no use with hardwood. Maybe if the drill bit provided were a little bigger it would be okay, and I'm sure it's fine with soft wood but I'm not building furniture out of pine. The design of the drive tool is flawed in that it gets stuck in the insert. So instead of the insert remaining in the work piece it has to be remove from the drive tool with plier. I had some success by lubricating both the drive tool and the insert, turning slowly by hand (not with a drill), and backing off every so often. But even still I had a may be 50% success rate. Now I'm off to go find a slightly bigger drill bit so I can hopefully finish this project on time. This was a complete waste of time and money. I know 2 stars is dramatic but this is a clear problem that doesn't seem to be getting enough attention.

These are great inserts overall. I use them for making custom beer tap handles, but need to be aware of the limitations of the installation tool for certain species of wood.If you are working with Walnut the insertion tool will work fine on a heavy enough drill, but if you are working with Cherry or Maple, forget about it. For the super hard woods I use the insertion tool to get maybe the first 2 threads into the piece as it does help keep the insert straight. After that switch to a hardened 1" bolt and a breaker bar to get them flush. No need to use any glue on the insert, they are never backing out once they are in place.

I picked this up to make turning Bottle toppers and a few other things easier, the nice insert making it a lot easier to mount on the lathe and install the bottle stoppers. The issue I ran into with this was that the driver worked to install the insert well enough but it also didn't want to release the insert and instead of leaving it behind in the wood as it should, it would pull it out 50% of the time. Maybe a little lube on the threads will make that go easier? The other thing I found was on about 50% of the inserts the threads just rip right off.I'm using the provided drill bit, driver, and inserts. When they work they work well enough but the failure rate is a bit high for my liking. I suggest using some lube on the driver threads to help it release on the way out. I tend to use hardwoods for these projects so maybe the inserts need to have better material so the threads don't peel off?I wouldn't say - don't buy this product - just know what your getting into and try to minimize issues by knowing that this can be an issue in some cases. This is an update after several more uses - The main issue I have is the driver - it gets stuck just about every time and I can back the drill off without pulling out the insert. The Driver needs to be redesigned so it will release from the insert way easier... I've not wasted more money on trashed expensive wood blanks than this tool cost.

Worked as intended for me, but I was surprised the driver has no keys to engage in the insert slots. That’s fine for insertion, but if I needed to back out an insert, I would have been out of luck.
