My apartment is long and narrow -- the front gets a little soft morning sun, and the back gets full force sun reflecting off concrete, turning my bedroom into an oven in summer. I learned to keep the bedroom door shut during the day, so the rest of the apartment stays cool without overworking the ac, but it takes lots of fans and a couple of hours to cool it every night -- and even then it's warmer than the rest of the place. This summer we're in a 100-degree stretch, so I knew I needed to find a better solution. This reflective mylar bubble stuff is the answer. It's barely wider than the windows in the faux french doors that radiate heat every afternoon, so it was easy to cover each entire window. The perfectly lined bubble pattern makes it easy to cut in a straight line to the right length. And a cheapie dollar store box cutter did the trick for trimming the excess once it was in place. The 3M adhesive included with it works to keep it in place, but the sheet itself doesn't cling to the window, and I didn't like that little gap between the insulating sheet and the glass. Fortunately, I have blinds over those windows, so I just went over all the edges with blue painter's tape, closed the blinds, and no one can see that I taped it.The reflective sheet looks like it would be opaque, but you can actually see a slight glow through it when the sun is out in full. However it's very dim, doing a good job of keeping that oppressively hot sunlight out of the room. The attached photo shows just how well it keeps out light at 1pm in a full-sun, 100-degree day. A few minutes after I had everything in place, the ac actually cycled off, which pretty much never happens these days! It's been a couple of weeks now, and the difference is incredible. With this insulation keeping heat out, my bedroom starts cool throughout the day, and I no longer have to close off that room. I can keep the house at a much more comfortable temperature, and the ac isn't running constantly. The difference is so great that my monthly thermostat report said it couldn't show results because I must have been using an alternate cooling source for my home. Overall, I'm very impressed and couldn't be happier with my purchase. This stuff is a great solution for an apartment-dweller who can't make any permanent changes to her home!
