Spurred on by the ever-steady rhythm section of Dave Kemper and John Kahn, complete with the celestial sounds of Melvin Seals' organ and background vocals of Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch.

Reviewer Steve hit the nail on the Deadhead.Why should you listen to me? I saw this incarnation of the JGB in 1989 and 1990 (as well as other JGBs, and the Grateful Dead every year from 1978-1994 except 1983 when I was working my ass off to get into grad school). I have had a collection of live GD and JGB since at least 1980, literally thousands of shows all told. This is as close to a Desert Island CD as JGB has ever produced. Garcia is in top form (at least for 1980 - 1995) and the band seems to be taking liberties with the arrangements from the start, which of course intrigues and stimulates Jerry. I'm guessing he's refreshed to be playing a little hall in Hilo as opposed to, say, the Philly Spectrum (to pick a random cattle yard of yore :o)This one is well worth seeking out. ENJOY !!

Ein spielfreudiger Jerry Garcia in Top-Form! Mein Favorit aus der Garcialive-Reihe. Die Setlist ohne große Überraschungen, aber ohne Durchhänger und die Songs relativ kompakt gespielt. Überraschenderweise sind die aus zig Grateful Dead Konzerten oft gehörten Songs 'They love each other', sowie 'Deal' unter meinen Favoriten, aber auch das soulige 'Like a road leading home' weiß zu begeistern. Für alle Dead Heads u JGB Fans ein Pflichtkauf und für jene die es werden wollen ein perfekter Einstieg...

As with many of the Garcia Live releases, and the Pure Jerry series previously, much repetition and redundancy sets in. Do these recordings add to the collective Garcia oeuvre, or are they mere Elvisish cash grabs? Luckily, this release breaks that mold somewhat, and finds a relaxed and fine sounding Jerry, playing with his best overall backing band, with a heavy list of covers, especially Dylan. The fresh air, beautiful skies, and scuba diving of Hawaii obviously suited his playing well, as the music is played with top notch musicianship, the singing by Garcia and the ladies in the band strong, and the overall feeling is as loose as a Hawaiian ocean breeze. Melvin Seals adds tasty licks on the organ, never overpowering, and David Kemper and the always steady John Kahn provide a great rhythm backbone. (Garcia always had the top-notch rhythm section behind him in the Dead, so generally was mindful of a solid drummer behind him when he was solo - Kemper and Ron Tutt being two of the best - and Kahn on bass, who complimented Garcia well). Garcia runs the gamut here, with rock, folkish rock, reggae, even gospel, which was his MO as a lover of all styles of music. The only thing I wish, given his immense talents on the guitar, is that Garcia would rip it up a little bit more, when he played solo, but regardless, his playing was generally always tasteful, and flawless.The Live series gives a great cross section of solo Jerry at various times, and various bands, in his career. Some, unfortunately, sound uninspired, but here, the gang is firing on all cylinders. A great song list, his best backing band by far, and clearly a will to connect with the audience. This is a great introduction for people new to his solo work, and a must have for collectors of All Things Garcia. As they may say on the Islands, this one is “Nui!”
