The first time I took this rod out to the surf it snapped just above the joint of the two sections while reeling in an average size Ray. I have also found videos on YouTube of this exact same thing happening. Definitely not the quality that I expected from the Penn name or the price.

I wanted to buy 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 lb ball peen (pein) hammers. I heard good things about Gedore (at least their "Made in Germany" products), so decided to give them a try. I had to sent back the first three hammers, all had defects. Another order, another return. All together, I've ordered 7 of these hammers, and sent back 5.The hammer heads were well made on most of the hammers. On a couple of them , the ball ends were not ground accurately (not really round). The paint finish on all of the heads had minor defects (missing paint, usually inside one of the GEDORE logo letters - both hammers on my photos have a bit of paint missing). The handles appear to be good quality and in general well processed. Instead of the black GEDORE logo (as in the product picture), the handles feature "Hickory" in golden letters (only subtly visible in my last photo as I didn't care about this). The ends of the handles have a large chamfer for some reason (I have various other hammers that don't have such chamfer), on 3 or 4 out of 7 hammers I tried this chamfer was cut very roughly and not sanded, this is quite unpleasant to the touch and leaves a cheap impression. Some of the hammers also had a ~0.5 mm deep indentation on the side near the head, perhaps left by some kind of holder used during production (a faint mark can be noticed in the photo of the larger 3/4 lb hammer in my photos). The handles are coated with a clear lacquer which I suppose provides good protection to the wood, but makes the handles a bit slippery. I'm just noting this as a fact, since this is common with other manufacturers as well, and the lacquer can be sanded off if the owner desires. The main problem for me is this: 5 out of 7 hammers had their heads mounted a few degrees off square. The 3/4 lb hammer in my photos has this issue, therefore I've returned it. I have no patience left to gamble trying to order one more and see if it will be better next time.A hammer is a rather simple device. It's of course fully usable even if the head is not exactly square, a bit of paint is missing, handle has a rough chamfer at the end... The last two are largely cosmetic defects which can be easily remedied by the owner if desired, but at least the maker should mount the head on square! When I pay 25 Euros for allegedly best quality "Made in Germany" tools of a well-known brand name, I expect something else than what I experienced with this product. You might as well pay less and get whatever brand hammer from a home improvement store - at least there you can inspect it in person.
