Had the urge to learn to play a stringed instrument and bought this not expecting too much, surely at this price it'd be nothing more than an expensive toy? I was greatly mistaken. This little instrument can actually carry a decent tune and as a newcomer it was very easy to pick up and within a few hours of playing was able to belt out some classics, much to the annoyance to everyone else within earshot. There's lots and lots of resources on the internet to help ukulele newbies - my advice is find a YouTube video and play along. This has been played almost daily for around 8 months, still with the same set of strings and the bodywork is still a bright shiny red with only minimal signs of usage.Make sure you download a ukulele tuning app or buy a cheap ukulele tuner as over the first few dozen hours of playing I found the strings will need slight retuning,Android tuner app: Clip on tuner: Spare strings:

The packaging was a big box but that's okay. I recycle. Just know, despite what other reviews possibly say, this is NOT a toy. I'm a self-taught uke player & I've been playing on a toy uke for over a year now. I learned because I was a Day Care Teacher & wanted something fun and different for the kids in circle time. I originally purchased a plastic SpongeBob uke from Toy'R Us so I KNOW what a toy Uke is. Despite it's smallness this Mahalo U-30BU is a real Uke. Its a soprano Uke so of coarse its suppose to be small. Some of the other reviewers seem surprised by its size. As for the strings, mine were black though the picture shows them as white (I'm sure for visual purposes.) Its light weight and easy to manage. As mentioned in several reviews you do have to tune it often at first. That is common for a new instrument. You don't necessarily have to replace the strings. You just have to "break it in" like you would a new pair of shoes or blue jeans. Even if you replace the strings, you still gotta tune it so.....get a tuner if you want. Sure you can change the strings if you want to too but don't feel that you have to. My new Uke had a "knick" in the fret board that was pretty noticeable but didn't affect the ability to play. Though the name on the uke is Mahalo, there is a "Made In China" sticker on the back. That made me snicker. On my first day of having it the "knick" no longer bothered me after playing it because now I see the knick as part of the uke's character (as we all have that one freckle, mole, ect. about ourselves.) So don't worry about a drip of paint or something if it doesn't affect the sound. The black paint from the fret board did rub off on my fingertips a little but I was okay with that. I actually enjoy the pains and trials of learning a new Ukulele song. I look forward to wearing the paint off. (Yeah, I'm weird, I'm writing a review on a ukulele okay?) I originally bought a toy uke because I wasn't sure if I was going to stick with it. But here I am nearly a year and a half later. No longer a Day Care Teacher but still playing my ukulele. Now I wished I had bought this Mahalo uke instead of the toy because I have some getting used to of a bit larger fret to deal with but I'm okay with that. Compared to my SpongeBob plastic (which actually sounded pretty good) this Mahalo sounds great! And its a couple of dollars less than the toy! Its pretty and fun. I love it. My Uke is my "magic blue pill" that chases my blues away so the blue color was important to me. Sure I plan on replacing the strings with blue ones soon but that isn't stopping me from having a blast with my new "Bluke" pill right now. If you're thinking of starting the Uke and buying this one.....DO! It's not that much money and so worth the investment. There are tons of resources out there on the internet to learn to play and this Ukulele is perfect for a beginner or some one wanting one for easy mobility and fun!!! Buy this uke and then strum like you mean it!I'm a blogger....[...]

I'm a Guitarist and was interested in buying a uke, so I started looking around at different brands. I didn't want to buy a really expensive uke, just in case I didn't like playing the ukulele, but I also didn't want a crappy one that was unplayable! I finally decided on this and I'm glade I did! Amazing price, and a cool looking uke. It arrived with a thin black gig bag that I was not even expecting. Mine came detuned (probably to keep from causing any neck tension) but once I tuned it up The uke played great! Once you get the strings worn in it only needs minor tuning every so often. It's pretty loud and has a nice tone, you will notice if you are a musician that some notes are a hair sharp, but not annoyingly way off, a lot better then what I was expecting. Very easy to learn if you are use to playing an instrument, learned around 15 chords in about 30 mins and was able to play 50+ songs from my song book in that short amount of time! I've had mine for around a year now and its holding up great! I recently repainted the front to look like a tuxedo, It looks great and gets a lot of complements! Thinking about adding a instrument output so I can hook up up to an amp and play with my band!In short:Cheap priceReal instrument, not a toyGreat ukeLoud with a nice toneSlight sharp notes (not noticeable to a non musician)Great for camping trips if you don't want to bring a really expensive instrumentGreat for anyone that wants to try the ukuleleEasy to learn and playGreat cheap gift for any musician(no problems I've found with the tuners, they stay in tune about as good as any of my guitars)Great quality product at a great price!
