I bought this primarily because of my new exercise program at age 59, halfhearted because of myocardial damage, re-plumed and with implanted pacemaker/ICD, I’m reading to succeed and this has helped.Not only running but other sport specific ( modes) of exercises are included with training plans. Though my personal condition is not addressed ( have never seen a book specific to that), the information within has taught me some new things for the better.

***UPDATE Oct 2023: To prove that this is the book that should ship with every heart rate monitor, take a look at the included photo. It's a graph of my Polar Running Index, which is an algorithm developed by Polar to track one's fitness improvement (or lack thereof). I restarted running in August2023 after surgery required a 6-week layoff. From that point, I followed the base-building phase and the transition phase to stamina training as outlined in the book. As the results show, I regained my previous level of fitness, then exceeded it by 2 pts. The method outlined, coupled with patience and consistency, works. Next up: economy and speed phases! ***END OF UPDATE***A more thorough, well-researched, well-written exposition of all things heart-rate-training-related you will not find. It is abundantly clear that the authors have done exemplary work in both verifying their conclusions and expressing them well. This is the book that will help you understand not just the hows and whys of heart rate training, but also the specifics of how they relate to your personal training goals. This is the book that should accompany any purchase of a heart rate monitor. Yes, it is densely packed with lots of information (I'm on my third reading and still discovering nuggets of information I missed the first two times). And as a practical matter, following these guidelines for developing my own training program has absolutely improved my fitness beyond what I was able to do alone.You don't have to be a full-on athlete to derive the benefits from this information. In fact, you might be happy to discover how easy it is to work out if all you want to do is drop a few pounds and stay in reasonable shape. Of course, there is plenty here for those of us who push toward faster race times or peak fitness, but you will benefit from reading this book even if you're just a weekend warrior.Highly, highly recommended.

If you are coaching or training using heart rate based training, then this the book to read. Well organized and lots of valuable information.

Very readable and informative book. This is a vast improvement over heart rate training books from years ago. I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in getting fit or improving their fitness level. Includes specific training plans for multiple sports with clear guidelines on how to achieve your personal goals, whether they be improved cardiovascular health, weight loss, or striving to become an elite athlete.One thing that was particularly helpful to me was the detailed explanation about how to accurately determine your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) and Target Heart Rate, especially as they relate to various sports. Without knowing your correct MHR for a given sport, it would be difficult to get the most out of your workouts. The authors list four components of physical fitness which they indicate must be developed in phases; the physiology behind developing fitness in this manner is explained very clearly and simply. This book has definitely helped me to work smarter, not just harder. I found that I was overdoing it and discovered that by doing so, my efforts were actually not resulting in improved fitness - in fact, they were detrimental.I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in making the most of training with a heart rate monitor.
