I bought this thermostat cuz it’s NOT programmable [I don't need one] and precisely cuz it's dual-powered; i.e. you can either hard-wire it or just use batteries or do both. I myself prefer to hard-wire and not use batteries. If you don't want to hard-wire, then you can install 2 AAA batteries to power the thermostat. Of course, if you hard-wire it, you still have the option to install batteries as backup. As I've said, this is not programmable. If you want a programmable one that's dual-powered, I think RTH7400D delivers. For my purpose, this Honeywell TH1110DH1003 Horizontal PRO 1000 Non-Programmable Thermostat suffices. I've not checked other models, but the best way to tell if a model has hard-wire option is check the installation guide [usually available online] and make sure there's a port labeled 'C'. If there's no C-port, then you cannot hard-wire. If there’s a C-port, make sure you have that common wire [usually color blue] coming out of the wall and connected at the other end to your HVAC transformer. Note: the common blue wire spits out 24 volts of energy.

I bought this thermostat to replace a older model programmable one. I only have two connector wires so I do not need a fancy thermostat. This was for the upstairs which I always set to 68 degrees. I do not like it hot to sleep. So far the thermostat is working beautifully. Installation was easy! The booklet included explains everything clearly. If I could install this product, anyone can. It even has a template for the screw holes.

Item received as indicated and scheduled appointment for installation was a breeze. Tech was very knowledgeable and helpful---he answered all my questions in addition to providing a few suggestions.
