When I ordered this I was totally expecting a mortar at least twice the size this is. Yes I saw that it was listed as being 3" but the pictures here threw off my perceptions. The one picture shows a hand that would be about the size of doll's hand in comparison to what you actually get. They need to stop putting these deceptive photos up to show what it is. It is a three inch mortar, but the working area is only about 2 inches across making this a very tiny mortar and pestle. In the photos it looks like a 7 or 8 inch mortar, but it absolutely is not what you are getting. It is tiny!It is cast iron and very heavy and it is coated with something, I'm hoping enamel. A small spot in the middle of the bowl had the enamel chipped off already, but it doesn't really look like enamel where it is chipped. I find it is a concern as they don't list anywhere what the coating actually is.It being a small mortar and pestle it is really only good for grinding small amounts of spices and herbs for a small dish or recipe. You won't want to use this for large amounts of stuff. That being said I tested it with a bunch of things I had on hand. Some roasted coffee beans, dried rosemary, pepper corns, rock salt, and dried bay leaves. I threw a couple of each in the mortar and got to grinding. Everything except the bay leaf was a fine powder after about 15 seconds of grinding, with about another 20 to 30 seconds to get the bay leaf into the rest of the fine powder. At this point I had a tan powder which smelled strongly of black pepper and I was unable to tell what went into it just by looking. It does exactly what it is intended to do, grind things up.It being made from cast iron it is easy to use and you don't have to spend a long time grinding things down in it. Obviously with more stuff in it it will take longer to grind. After cleaning it, I could tell I had ground stuff with it by looking in the bottom of the mortar and the end of the pestle and see that they were abraded from the use. I don't know what the coating on the the mortar and pestle is, but you will definitely be consuming this with use and it is rubbed off. I need to get a lead testing kit to check it out. Chinese manufacturers are notorious for using lead based paint on things and I want to make sure I'm not poisoning my family with it.

As someone that lives alone, this little kitchen tool is amazingly versatile for my single meal needs. After usage, it's very easy to clean and keep clean. Additionally, it's so easy to store. Since I am very limited on space to store my kitchen stuffs, I was pleased that his fulfilled all my needs.
