I have been mountain biking for a while. I coach a HS MTB team and have been riding flats for years. I also started road biking for great fitness. Last year I tried clipless on my MTB and was really impressed by the additional power on climbs and great foot positioning. After a season and a few crashes, I went back to flats as a safer option in rock gardens etc, but felt lacking in power. I watched a few YouTube videos and found some advanced riders looking to solve a similar dilemma, and they pointed to the multi release clips. These are usually marketed for beginners on sod's but I have to tell you that if you are a flat pedal rider that is used to putting weight and pressure in your pedals you will not be disappointed with these. Gives you the security of a SPD Clip but allows the multi directional release of a flat pedal. When I was using regular SPD clips I always had them in the lightest settings, with the multi release I had to crank them down more. They do allow me to pull up on the pedal straight up for additional power but feel safe in tight rock gardens that might require me to out a foot down occasionally.Give them a try and I think you will be pretty happy. I did chose these as my pedals are Look, but Shi offers a similar option. They should all be cross compatible, but I have not tested and compared the two versions in my Look pedals.
