On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the beginning of the Summer of Love, the first and only Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade s spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll. Monterey featured career-making performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, but they were just a few performers in a wildly diverse lineup that included Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Byrds, Hugh Masekela, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar. With his characteristic verite style and a camera crew that included the likes of Albert Maysles and Richard Leacock D. A. Pennebaker captured it all, immortalizing moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend smashing his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his, Mama Cass being blown away by Janis Joplin's performance. The Criterion Collection is proud to present this timeless document of a landmark event.DIRECTOR-APPROVED DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES- New 16-bit 4K digital restoration of Monterey Pop, supervised by director D. Le film décrit le festival pop de Monterey de 1967 et montre plusieurs images inédites. On peut y voir les prestations de Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas and the Papas, The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, Otis Redding, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, etc. Des noms plus que mythiques. Bien sur, Monterey Pop n'a pas l'aura qu'aura le film sur le festival de Woodstock en 1969 mais il vaut quant même la peine d'être vue.

I try to stay away from reviewing movies or music albums because there is no agreed upon method people use to rate them. Some people look at the overall performance while others critique the individual performers or directors or other roles in the credits. Then there are those who focus their attention on the quality of the disk pressing, or if the case is cracked or the cover artwork or something about the seller. I’m just going to take a casual birds eye look at my overall experience with this product.1. I suddenly decided I wanted this disk one day when a friend mentioned the festival. Both of us lived in Monterey at one time in our early lives but that was several years after the festival. I was aware of it back then because the company I worked for did some of the sound and lighting for it. I have seen small segments of the performances but never anything about the entire event. So I was interested.2. I almost didn’t buy it because there are two nearly identical pages but one’s pricing is substantially more for the same thing. Since you landed on this page, congratulations, you got the better deal.3. Being in the business of making TV and movies myself I know the reality that you can’t take film that’s over fifty years old and make it look or sound as good as something made today. The efforts to enhance old film and soundtracks are far better now that in the early days of digital processing but personally I think making a Blu-Ray of something that old is useless. My preference would be to see and hear it exactly as it was recorded back then. But I bought the Blu-Ray anyway, thankfully you can turn off the multi-channel sound and revert to a simple stereo track.4. I may differ from others on my opinion of what this product is but I understand it to be a documentary. Such movies about music and musicians never include full songs in their original order, that’s not the purpose of a documentary. I’m not on the same page as those who expected it to be an album of the full concert with every set and every song in its full and uncut originality. If that’s what you want this movie isn’t for you.5. There’s some other misinformation I’ve seen, like five minutes of ads with no cancel button. I believe they are reviewing a different product, the disk starts with the typical movie menu and when you select play the movie starts immediately.6. I think I saw something about the case being unusual and the disk being difficult to remove without breaking it. Yes the case doesn’t have indentations for your fingertip but all you have to do to remove the disk is to press on the button in the spindle hole. It pops right out.As a movie that includes a gathering of performers that will never again be repeated with performances that are truly legendary the film is entertaining and for those way too young to have experienced that era who want more, there are full complete collections and albums available. For the low price of this set I think it was an enjoyable movie night and worth owning a physical copy. It seems such things are becoming rare these days.
