We just went through a major learning experience trying to match the color of our front porch shutters to our faux wood grain front door. I’m glad we were patient and didn’t give up based upon initial results. The door has a significant amount of localized color variation. Our initial attempt to match the color by eye using the small Sherwin Williams color wheel swatches involved me, my wife, and two professional painters. We chose what everyone agreed was a good match, but after applying the paint we ended up with a much lighter shade of brown. That was a fail!Since I could not take any part of my door to my Sherwin Williams paint store for a precision color match, I started looking at handheld paint colorimeters. I chose the Nix Mini 3R based upon positive reviews, availability, and price. The Mini 3R is a Mini 3 factory recalibrated and refurbished with the plastic parts replaced. I received the unit on a Saturday, 50 minutes before the paint store closed. I was able to install the app on my phone, quick charge the battery for 20 minutes, take two readings on the door, and got to the store 4 minutes before closing. The Mini 3R had found no close matches but identified 25 SW partial matches. I picked up color swatches of the top four matches and headed back home. We were a bit disappointed in all four, but I decided to give the Nix one more chance. I began sampling several different spots on the door, and although there were marked differences in hue, each time the Nix produced the same top choice. So, next day, I went back to SW and purchased a $12 container of their paint sampler which only comes in satin finish. I painted a 1x2 ft piece of plywood, and taped it to the shutter. Looking at a larger panel, and with the shutter approximately ten feet away from the door, it became obvious the color match suggested by the Nix was quite good. I then went back to SW and bought a quart of the same color in gloss finish to better match the varnished door. Painting the bottom half of the plywood with the gloss produced the final result. It is win!I have since used the Mini 3R to sample two colors on the outside of the house, and eight color swatches, four each from SW and PPG. It was dead-on identifying the two outdoor colors and seven of the eight swatches. The Nix is very good at identifying colors that are an exact match to manufacturer’s production colors. As you might expect, finding colors that are a close match is more challenging, especially when trying to match an artificial wood grain finish. I’m glad we trusted the Nix enough to purchase a sample and paint a larger panel. We learned color matches look very different based upon sample size, lighting, positioning, separation distance, and sheen. If you are considering purchase of a Nix, I would say do it, and don’t give up without producing a realistic sized sample. It is a good colorimter.

Just wanted to share some valuable information if anyone is involved in the Nix Mini 3 and a protective case.Ive used a nix colour sensor before and this Mini 3 is a great improvement on older generations inc the app features and general use-ability.I mainly use the sensor in the Construction Industry/Surveying/Project Management sector.Really works a treat and the improvements to the device and app are very welcome and make the process incredibly easy and professional and more importantly, accurate!! I pay for the premium Paint subscription for RAL collections. Which again, helps tremendously and i can save and share the collected data / scanned colours.I also bought and would totally recommend a protective case to put the NIx Mini 3,.. (My Choice was the Ugreen Earphone Case.)The Nix Mini 3 is a calibrated small device, so a “Hard Shell” type which i have used before for other items , and found it again, to be perfect for the Job.I still carry RALL Swatch cards like the K5 for Gloss & Semi Matt samples and they can be great as a confirmation on site, But to be completely honest,….they are Not needed anymore as I have found the accuracy of the Mini 3 absolutely Spot On.

I was disapointed to discover that the product was refurbished, something that wasn’t obvious in the text on the website. And the charging didn’t work at all.
