Very ingenious mechanical pencil. It is capped which protects the lead. The cap posts at the back of the pen to make up a full-size mechanical pencil, but the tip of cap itself links to the pencil mechanism and lets you advance the lead while it is posted. The pen itself has a solid heft and the mechanism is solid like the rest of the pentel line.

Me encanta éste portaminas.

If you are looking for a professional mechanical pencil that will last forever and provide consistent results, look no further than the Pentel Kerry 0.7. It is a classic!!!!PROS:- Solid construction - a mixture of metal and plastic, but all in the right places- Cap to cover the tip (for protection and to eliminate marking up your pockets)- Short metal tip to reduce lead breaks- Perfect weight for a balanced feel; helps reduce strain- Nice barrel shape - again to reduce hand fatigueCONS:- None!I had bought one of these WAYYYYYY BACK in 1980. It was my #1 mechanical pencil and it performed flawlessly throughout its lifetime... until it was stolen from me in 1990... sad days. Unfortunately, the local vendors no longer carried this model and I had to settle with another pencil (I chose a Rotring Series 600 0.5, which is another fantastic pencil!).Move forward to 2012... I was on Amazon looking for something and under the suggestions I saw the Pentel Kerry!!!! It's still alive!!!!!! I ordered one immediately!!!! Now, I have the greatest mechanical pencil once again!First thing: it hasn't changed one bit!!!! The design is still exactly how I remember it way back when! Beautiful finish, metal used where it's needed, and overall construction that easily matches the Rotrings. The Pentel Kerry has a very comfortable shape and weight to it. The body is plastic, but its shape is very nice and quite comfortable. I am an estimator in the construction industry and I perform take-offs constantly. It is very important that the lead does not break. The key is the tip: I find that shorter tips prevent the lead from breaking more frequently, rather than a long tip which can bend under pressure, thus allowing lead breaks more frequently (also, the lead diameter is important, thus I use 0.7 as my first choice). The protective cap design is also ingenious! It helps protect the tip when not in use and also protects your pockets from all the lead trails and rips that normal mechanical pencils pose from exposed tips. Fantastic design!Overall, I am very satisfied with the Pentel Kerry. It was a true performer back in the 80's and still is in today! You will not be disappointed!

Background: I am a huge fan of the Pentel sharp Kerry. I actually used this mechanical pencil 10+ years ago when it was called the Pentel 5. Since then the name has changed, but the pencil is still of the same high quality. I currently own about 5-6 of these. I have neglected to write a review for this pencil for about 4 years now (orig purchased on amazon back in 2008). But I use it almost everyday that I believe it truly deserves a good review. So here goes...How it writes? Probably one of THE MOST smoothest mechanical pencils I have ever used. Call me a mechanical pencil geek, but I used to collect different mechanical pencils (ranging from several japanese mechanical pencils to more widely known "Dr. Grips" to test out how each one wrote. The sharp kerry was hands down my favorite. Because the construction of the pen is very solid, there the pencil is of perfect weight (not too light nor too heavy).Build of the pencil? Absolutely solid. As many of the other reviewers have mentioned, the pencil itself comes with a cap which can be attached on either end of the pen. Either the writing end or the eraser end. It is great that there is a refillable pentel eraser at end of the cap. I also feel that the pencil has great durability. The metal on it is not cheap shiny plastic, but rather strong metal. I actually dropped it on the floor a couple of times, yet still no scratches or dents.Aesthetics? One of the most beautiful pencils I have ever used. The metallic appearance of the pencil gives it a "executive look". I have gotten several complements from others- many of whom thought the pencil cost at least $50!Cons? Very few if any! My only grudge is that the small little silver caps can get lost. Not because it falls off easily, but rather if you misplace it when you are using the eraser. I have lost one of the silver caps (but totally my fault), but I am sure that Pentel sells replacement caps.Bottom line: If you are looking for a elegant and classy pencil that write very smoothly, this is definitely for you. Of note, Amazon now offers it for ~$12. When I bought these pencils several years ago it cost ~$20!

i just recieved back surgery for spondylolasthesis... painful, and i have been out of school for a month. i received a gift card from family for amazon and looked for a nice mechanical pencil and pen to help me through the strenuous make up work i had ahead of me. i chose this wonderful pencil... which yes, does have an eraser (take the cap off the point end and replace it on the other side. then, take off the little metal cap that you click to advance the lead... there it is)which i don't use because it is small and i don't want to buy replacements. i use a "Faber Castell DUST-FREE 18 71 20 Clean and Soft Erasing" as an eraser for the KERRY pencil. for lead, i recomend using "Pentel super hi-polymer leads. i chose the 0.7mm version out of pure preferance... i write with heavy hands and require thick lead sizes (i haven't broken any lead yet... AMAZING for me). i have no complaints with this pencil, in fact i love everything about it, the way the cap recaps on the other side and adds the perfect balance while writing, the look of the grille and metallic black finish (its survived many drops... not even a scratch), and most of all how smooth/comfortably it writes which is important when you have hours and hours of tutors, make up work, and even pleasure writing ahead of you (its best use). i deeply thank pentel and all of its manufacturors as well as goldenflyfisher (my shipper)for this (yet another) wonderful product by pentel. if any-one has any question about this pencil leave it in as a review for this item... i will check daily and get back to you (i have little - no doubt that you love this pencil).p.s. the pen i chose (5 stars... two thumbs up) is the "Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pen - black ink"
