I would say that some degree of wood working experience and skill is necessary to make use of this jig. If you just jam random sticks into this - you're not going to get the results you expect.First off, it won't work well with soft or green woods unless you really stabilize the feed through.Second, control your speed - the smaller the faster, and watch your chips and consider the grain direction when doing so!Lastly - this works far better with harder denser woods. I was able to get a very smooth finish and spiraling chips with core walnut. Softer woods, with looser grains will need a sanding after. Also, do not use a socket or impact driver - that will just make a mess of things (again, some skill and experience is necessary).Lastly, you need to step down to the final size you want - start with the biggest bore. Your finish will improve with smaller steps. Leave room for sanding if you're looking to use these as exposed elements in your project.I like how this jig comes with a mounting flange, but I opted to bolt it directly using the two threaded holes that hold the orange mounting plate on.

Works well. However needs a special chuck for the drill to really make it work

Poor dowel surface finish requires a lot of sanding which, in turn, makes it slightly undersized. I would not purchase this unit again.

It works wonderfully as long as the piece going into it is centered.
