I got this chuck for use with my Bridgeport style milling machine, specifically I got this as a secondary drill chuck for use when doing repeated operations that require frequent drill switching. In regard to build quality goes it seems decent and bites down on the drill bits well and moves smoothly. As far as run out goes I found it fine for a drill chuck (if I needed high precision I would look to a collet or a dedicated tool holder rather than a drill chuck anyway).Overall, it meets my expectations of a r8 mounted drill chuck, and I am satisfied that it will fulfill the job I intended to use it in.

Most of the drill chucks in my shop are fairly high quality. But, they are also quite expensive. I needed something with a bit more capacity for my benchtop milling machine so I decided to give this one a shot. Out of the box it looks pretty well made, other than the expected lack of finish work here and there. First of all the arbor looks really nice. It is not marked in any way, but it appears to be a Jacobs No. 6 taper. The keyway will need a bit of deburring with a stone. I was not expecting any significant runout on the arbor since it looks to be ground between centers, all in one operation. However, when I spun it up in my machine I got a full 0.001" of runout. The R8 taper fit my machine perfectly with plenty of engagement on the drawbar. After attaching the chuck (see various online instructions how to properly do this) I was surprised to find only about 0.015" of runout in the whole assembly. This was measured with a 3/8" gauge pin in the chuck because runout is usually established in the middle of the capacity range. It is fairly common to have up to 0.003" of runout in a chuck of this type. The bevel gears worked smoothly and there seems to be plenty of gripping force. This is definitely not on par with the quality of a name-brand US or European chuck, but its also nowhere near the price. So if you're looking for an inexpensive chuck for hobby use, this seems to be a pretty good value.

I got this for the drill chuck, not the R8 shank, so I'm just reviewing the chuck. It massively outperforms the stock chuck on my cheap little shop drill press, although the drill press spindle runout is so bad that I would assume this chuck can perform even better on a more capable machine. The jaw movement is very smooth and this seems well machined. It seems like very good value for money and I would say it is better than what I expected at this price point.

Ok, let's get this out of the way to start with- this is not an expensive machinist's chuck. Some people might look at it, "But it comes with an R8, it's intended to be used on a machine tool." Well, it's not a precision chuck, it's not a ball-bearing chuck, it's not a fancy whatever. It's just a cheap chuck that is sold with a matching R8 arbor. Now that said, it's really quite good for the money. I know that I consider acceptable, I chucked up a piece of 8" long straight chromed shafting in it and spun it up at slow speed and it had the slightest perceptible wobble, it would be easy to put it in a center punch mark with a drill bit. Good. For the sake of argument, I googled what is considered acceptable, the AI returned:"The acceptable runout for a drill chuck depends on the drill being used and other factors. A good quality chuck has an average runout of about 3–5 thousandths, while machinist grade chucks are usually 1/2–1 thousandths"So, using the setup I show in the pictures, zeroed as shown, you could see the runout I measured. It was between 002 and .003". Now interestingly, and this is the only reason I took one star off, it was repeatable at .002" or .003" depending on how you clamped the shaft in the chuck. I checked my old clapped-out Bridgeport spindle, but that wasn't it, I checked my piece of shafting, dead straight, and after a little fidgeting with the dial gauge setup I found that I could get the chuck to shift a little bit, it almost felt like the click you get when tightening a keyless chuck. One way, .002", and the other way, .003". Since this is not behavior that I've seen in a sleeved, geared, keyed chuck before and a few minutes of poking it didn't reveal what was causing it, it lost a star because I don't like mysteries. Secondly, if you look at the machining of the R8 arbor shaft you'll see some rough spots which you will want to stone off before putting this into use (you don't want to chew up the pin in your R8 spindle).Ok, so it's not perfect. Yes, I took a star off, but I would still highly recommend it. Anyone looking for a 5/8"/16mm capacity chuck of this grade for an R8 spindle machine would be quite happy with this for the money. All the parts came double-wrapped in 2 plastic bags and coated with a healthy dose of cosmoline or at least something thick and gooey to protect them from rusting.

This is a really heavy duty drill press chuck. It feels heavy in the hand and well made. I plan to use it to replace the one in my old 80's model Chicago Electric floor model drill press. I have no doubt it's better than the one that came with it.
