I have used many refractometers over the years, and this one is one of the best. Its small size makes it easy to carry in my pocket so I can even test expresso shots at my favorite coffee spots. The app allows me to save all the details in making espresso shots at home which is super convenient in trying to tweak or just reproduce my receipes.

The device works as advertised. While the app is a little cumbersome (just very cluttered), it works well to record and graph your extractions based on your recipe. Overall, it’s helped me not only to dial in my coffee, but also my taste for coffee.As a novice espresso making, it confirmed that my brew was under/over extracted during the dialing in process. That being said, I usually go by taste now and only use the device when I’m really stumped or for when I’m roasting, to confirm what I’m tasting is from the roasting process versus brewing process.TL;DR it’s helpful for dialing in your brew and taste.

The R2 Extract combo is an incredible set to take your coffee to new heights.The refractometer is easy to use and I was able to easily get accurate readings with my pourover brews. The readings seemed coherent with what I was tasting in the cup and reflected the changes I made to grind size, temperature, and pouring style. Very impressive!The scale is super accurate and extremely fast. The integrated flow rate display makes it easy to track your pouring and agitation for pourovers, or when doing pressure or flow profiling with espresso.Bluetooth and app integration is excellent and very easy using iOS. I was able to configure both devices using the DiFluid Cafe app, but I really only use them within the excellent Beanconqueror app that I have been using for well over 2 years now. Both devices integrate perfectly with Beanconqueror and I was soon looking at incredibly detailed flow/weight graphs while also adding the extraction yield to each brew.In summary -- if you are looking to truly explore your brews and go deep into coffee science, the R2 Extract combo is an excellent set of tools that will help get you there.

Works with coffee, which is all I use it for.Pros:Compact sizeGives repeatable results, so I think it's pretty accurate. It's +/- 0.1%Well built, better than I expected.Works fastSoftware (Android app) is based around coffee, but I don't really use that. I use it for dialing in my grind & flow rate.Cons:None really, I need to have distilled water on hand for calibration, but that's expected, so not really a negative.

The DiFluid R2 is a great alternative to the VST refractometer, it costs a fraction and based on side-by-side comparisons with the VST at work it's just as accurate and consistent. The VST is bigger and I feel has better build quality. I keep my R2 in the original box and store it in a drawer in the kitchen. I use it about 3 to 4 times a week and calibrate once a week. So far, it has worked well. The spoon works very well for me and I appreciate it's non-stick surface because it makes it very easy to clean. The same is true for cleaning the refractometer lens, I just place a small piece of paper towel over the lens to absorb the coffee, I don't wipe or apply pressure to prevent any scratches. I then place a drop or two of distilled water on the lens and drop another small piece of paper towel to absorb the water, then dry it off with a dry Q tip with very light pressure. As a final step I use the microfiber to lightly dab the lens to make sure it's completely dry.I gave it 4 stars for ease of use because it is very small and light and I feel you have to be really really gently, unlike the VST which is rubberized and feels really sturdy. Having said that, the screen is backlit which makes it very easy to read. Overall, no regrets with this product. 5 stars.
