handle was stuck, no directions but this worked to fix. first, try to twist handle counter clock-size to unlock. (mine would not move but that is how the design is supposed to work). if that does not work, put the handle over a doorknob or something sturdy and pull down hard. That separated the 2 pieces for me. Once separated I lubricated the metal shaft. Now the paddle works great. Finally, one positive of the design.... you can lock the length of the paddle anywhere from 18" to 31" so if in an emergency you need more handle strength simply don't extend the paddle the whole way (keep less than 31"), this strengthens handle considerably

Bought this as a back up and sculling paddle for my fishing kayak. As a light use item, this fits the bill very well.
