Recovering from surgery has given me a new insight to those who have disabilities or just have trouble getting about. I thought we had done a good job, but it turns out, no so much.Getting into a tub was impossible, but so was a 3 inch threshold to a shower. Confined to a wheelchair and using a chair on wheels to negotiate the shower, we soon realized we needed a rethink on the entrance to a shower. The transition need to be seamless, with no bump.Instead of a shower door that swung out and has to be dealt with while seated, we purchased one that slides out of the way. it will have a flexible "skirt" on the bottom of the door that will keep splashed water in. That way no threshold would be needed. But an event just last week brought up a terrible problem. The drain in the shower clogged and water began to rise. Without a threshold, water would have gone all over the floor. Ack!We need something to drain away water headed for the exit. That is where this drain comes in. This rectangle shape drain will be an inverted threshold of sorts. Any water that would go under the door will instead, fall into it. In this case, it will be a secondary drain. It will connect to the waste line separately. If you use a secondary shower drain, it should have its own trap. I will need to remember to pour some water in it once in a while. We plan on pouring some water in it whenever we clean the shower. The reason that you do this is because an unused drain trap can dry out and let sewer gas to enter the home. This drain is well built and it was well thought out. The removable cover is great and the hair trap is a great idea. To include a tool to remove the hair trap was an inexpensive but brilliant move.Trying to explain what I needed to an associate at a big box store was met with blank stares. Specialty stores had what I needed, but they were asking a LOT more, many did not have a removable grille and some looked like a drain in the concrete at the In A Minute Oil Change.I gave it 5 stars for the design, the quality, and the price. This one pretty much fell in my lap and I was very happy for that!

It has a little basket under the grill, so you can remove it, to clean out the hair. Great idea!!
