Simplicity Pattern 8510 P5 Misses' Vintage Brassiere and Tap Panties Sewing Pattern, Size 12-20The pattern is well drafted, using the same markings Simplicity uses today. The accompanying instructions are generally clear, but the syntax is obscure for several sections of view B requiring trial-and-error construction. (Minus 1 point, Simplicity.) Overall, this pattern is an easy layout and cut. Hand sewing skill is optional but useful for each view: stay-stitching, tacking, and hand-rolled hems. While the pattern indicates lightweight fabrics including silks, batistes, and lawns, this is not a good pattern to begin working with them.As always with vintage patterns, pay attention to sizing charts. A good starting estimate for mid 20th century garments is six numbers more than contemporary sizing: a contemporary size 6 approximately equals a 1950's size 12. That's just a beginning, as different designers worked with slightly differing sizes, and pattern companies had no standard for ease. Simplicity patterns generally had an ease of 2"-3" more than exact body measure.
