I bought my first sewing machine in Dec 2020, and made this jacket in February. (My mom taught me how to sew a straight seam 45 years ago and I never did anything with it). I did a quick muslin prototype before making the real thing out of cheap calico cotton from JoAnn's. This pattern is typical of real commercial patterns (as opposed to Etsy ones) in that there were many "HUH...?" moments. Somehow I did it, and was pretty happy with the results. I shortened it where indicated, which was probably a good idea. I do plan to make this again, but will find a way to flatten the chest to match my own shapelessness, although I did notice that even on the model, there is some baggy-ness in the outer front on both sides. Simplicity included separate patterns for different sized bra cups, but the smallest is a B.One more thing. I wanted long sleeves, but didn't want puffy ones. So I made a hybrid sleeve combo using the 3/4 length pattern piece at the top, and full length piece at the bottom. Not sure how much that threw things off since I don't know what I'm doing, but it turned out okay. Also, I eliminated the pockets.Regarding the size--this is the OLD sizing, long before vanity took over. Don't ignore the chart on the back. I'm sort of low normal weight at 5' 3.5" and 114 lbs. In preposterous vanity sizes (American Eagle jeans) I wear a ZERO. Yes, zero. In typical modern day vanity sizes I wear a 4. Looking at the chart on the back, I thought I'd better start my prototype with an 8. Well! Even that was tight across the shoulders! So the final product was a 10, a size I never wear unless I'm going for a big t-shirt, and I definitely wouldn't want to go any smaller. My shoulders get claustrophobic.If you have experience sewing, this pattern will be easy for you. I had no experience, but was able to fight my way through. I finished my seams to make them pretty, mostly for the experience, and there was a lot of hand finishing at the end. Additionally, I did all hems by hand, which I hate. I mean, why have a sewing machine if you're still going to do stuff by hand? It's tedious. I'm not too keen on couture. Not even sure I spelled it right.Anyway, I like this pattern and will likely make it again in a fabric like the one on the envelope front. Might even expand the shoulders to a size 12.
