These gauges are handy, easy to read and can be in your tool box without worry of batteries like electronic calipers. I especially like how rugged they are and how little space they take up.

So, it includes 3 pieces. As a test, I have a piece of 12 gauge solid wire Romex. The smallest rectangular gauge in the package doesn't even have 12 gauge, for some reason. But my 12 gauge wire is too big for the 14 gauge slot, and not as big as the 10 gauge slot, as expected. The missing 12 gauge on it is annoying, but I got expected results given what it has.Now I take the 12 gauge wire and try to use the larger rectangular gauge. On that gauge, my 12 gauge wire looks is tight in the 14 gauge slot, but seems to fit. I'm not sure how much slop there should be, but if I was using this gauge to try to size my wire, I think I would conclude I had 14 gage wire. Now I try to use the round gauge. My 12 gauge wire definitely won't fit in the 14 gauge slot. But it is like halfway between 13 and 14 gauge, clearly smaller than 13 gauge and much smaller than 12 gauge. Given that odd number wire sizes are virtually nonexistent, if I was using this gauge to size my wire, I don't know what size I would think I had.Maybe I would get different results if I had stranded wire instead of solid? Maybe there is something that I'm not understanding and maybe it make sense to someone else. But it doesn't to me. So what good is this?
