For the price this is a really good beginners setup. It is a quality rod and reel that would last for years the kit the line and everything are really good to start plus you also get a really nice carring case. I switched out the line and leaders personal choice and still use the rod and reel as it is a good setup.

Took my new rod and reel to my son's father-in-law who happens to be a life-long fly fisherman. He was very impressed with both the rod and reel and how balanced they were. He loaded up the reel for me with the included line and leader and he, my son and I headed to a local pond for a lesson. The Sougayilang performed flawlessly. I caught a sunfish and a large mouth bass and fishing partners both got skunked. After that my son decided to get himself a fly rod but wanted to buy it from the local Bass Pro Shop. After testing a number of rods and reels he began adding up what it would cost to get what came in the deal that I got. Over $200 dollars was a hard pill to swallow compared to my kit so he walked out empty handed as he decided to get one "just like dad's".

I bought two of these in the 7/8 weight range for my tween age daughters to use on our annual trip to Alaska for salmon. I lived in Alaska for several years and go back regularly to fish. I have cheap and $1000 setups that I use depending on what species I’m chasing. In short I know what a fly rod needs to do and what is a nice to have. These under $100 kits have most of the hardware you will need need. We caught pink, coho, sockeye and chum salmon on these rods and they did just fine for all of it. The drags worked fine, although they don’t sound great anymore and the rod is a good compromise on stiffness for beginners. The fly line is cheap but functional. The cases are a nice adder. The flies are junk, but that’s ok as you will need to match the local conditions and species anyway and the fly boxes worked just fine. The leaders are very light for heavier fish and should be upgraded. Skip the finger trap loop and learn to tie the proper knots. We did have one of the reel seats on the rod come loose and the reel will twist on the rod if side pressure is applied. It is still fishable. Don’t buy these If you expect to fish 200 days per year. But for a week or two trip or as a backup rod, they are a great deal.

Update: been a year now and this combo is still going strong! I’ve caught some nice smallmouth on it as well.7/8 wt combo review: The only thing I did was buy better leaders and tippets based on some recommendations from others, otherwise this combo did very good with everything from 12” rainbows to massive coho salmon. The drag worked great, there is defiantly more backing included than you need. I used about half. The line was marked with a sticker for which end goes where. Overall I recommend this set up. I did not use the flies it came with but they’re not terrible. I was not sure I would enjoy fly fishing as I tried it with a combo from bass pro about 15 years ago and had a terrible time with it. Don’t know of it was my age or this combo, But I feel like I could not have asked for a better reintroduction to fly fishing. Looking forward to summer fly fishing for bass and pike.
