A little pricey for home use but accurate and easy to use.

I've had one of these model 1584 scales for at least fifteen years, using it to weigh our cats every week. It has been very reliable, but recently started displaying about two ounces low, and I chose to order a new one, which now reads accurately. (There is no calibration option.) It is to Tanita's credit that they've been offering this same model for so long - the only difference I could see was that the cradle attaches with Philips-type screws instead of flat-blade screws. While there are many similar-appearing scales for sale, most of which are far less expensive, the Tanita was the only one I found with a front push button that I can tap with a toe to make it ready - all the others make you push a button on the top panel.Like my old one, the instruction leaflet (almost unchanged) doesn't mention the bag of plastic feet included in the package - these push on the bottom of the scale to add a bit of stability. I complained to Tanita that the URLs on the included card, pointing to web pages to register the purchase and to download documentation, didn't work. They may have fixed the registration URL with a redirect by the time you read this, but I still don't know where the download page is.

We needed another accurate scale to weigh the cats and smaller dogs at our Veterinary Hospital. Some scales can be scary for these precious little ones, but this scale fit the bill perfectly. We tote this scale around all over the hospital and it stands up well and remains accurate (as compared to two other scales at our office). Will definitely purchase another one when the time comes.

We had been weighing our baby with a loaner from the hospital which was highly accurate (it was an $800 scale of the same type used in the hospital NICU). We needed to return the hospital scale but wanted to continue weighing our baby, so we bought this one. It only claimed an accuracy of 1/2 ounce, but that would still have been fine for our purposes.Unfortunately, it turned out that this scale was off by 8 ounces when compared with the hospital scale. Worse than the fact that the weight was inaccurate was the fact that the amount of variation changed from day to day: over a 1-week period when we had both scales the hospital scale showed a normal weight gain of 1/2 to 1 ounce per day, but over the same period the Tanita 1584 scale showed no change in our baby's weight at all. Had we been relying solely on the Tanita scale the apparent lack of weight-gain over a week would have prompted an unnecessary visit to the pediatrician. So, I don't expect this scale to have the same accuracy as an $800 hospital scale, but this one was off by a ridiculous amount and didn't even come close to the 1/2 ounce accuracy claimed by the manufacturer.
