This is a very nice quality, thick silicone mat. Has indentations for tamper, etc., and raised/bumpy area for draining a cup or similar. I have no problem tamping the portafilter on the mat, but note that it does not have any way to hold the portafilter the way espresso tool blocks usually do. Mat is both fairly heavy and "sticky" on the back, so no chance it will slide accidentally (though also somewhat tough to slide it out of the way on the counter). I wanted a siilcone mat that was a reasonable size and did not fit over the front of the counter. This fits the bill. On the other hand, a block type tool holder would make it easier to move your entire set of tools. But then you have to have space to store the block. A mat can be easily stored in a cupboard or drawer.

This is a great quality tamping station. The rubber is thick and it stays in place. I like that there are places for both my tamper and distribution tool. It’s too large for my coffee station but I just use it on the counter nearby. Would highly recommend!
