great value for the price, took some time to hook it up to all my devices but works great now. The frame is quite flimsy so it appears all the money went into the screen in this piece of equipment, but as long as one is careful that shouldn't be a problem. Sharp picture good sound. Update I've had this tv for a year with no problems. Better than I expected.

I already own this TV so the TV is excellent. This is a review about Amazon's refurbished system, the interface with a remote did not work. Yes I had batteries in the remote yes I tried my other remote for this exact TV and no it did not work. If this is an Amazon refurbished guaranteed product stay away from all refurbished Amazon products.

I've owned (and reviewed) several smart TVs, but I've largely avoided TCL. I haven't had problems with the brand (I've bought some of their "dumb" TVs in the past for guest bedroom use), but I was a little leery of their tie up with Roku. I bought a Roku around a decade ago, and I noticed when they discontinued app support for their older devices. I just assumed that TV manufacturers with their own TV OS and app ecosystems may be better about long-term customer aftercare. That was before I saw the price on the TCL 55S423... worst case, I can put a Fire Stick on it, right?Packaging/Build Quality/AppearanceThe TCL 55S423 arrives in a large box, complete with full-length styrofoam blocks at the top and bottom of the box. The stands are located in cavities in the top block, and the goodie bag (remote, paperwork, and composite adapter) is accessible from the top. The screen is in a foam and plastic bag, and is additionally protected by a thick corrugated cardboard slab. The bezel of the screen also has protective tape applied. The screen arrived undamaged. Suprisingly, the stands are made of metal. They are cast, and are either aluminum or magnesium (they are VERY light). The power cord is an unpolarized, standard 2-prong affair... it's extremely short, so you'll want to source a longer replacement if you want some more flexibility on placing the TV. The remote is a little smaller than normal for a TV, but will be familiar to anyone that has used a Roku before.Setup/PerformanceAttaching the stands is the only mechanical setup step. Each stand attaches with two screws. One of my stands wouldn't index to the guide pins, but that was due to a little bit of plastic "flashing" that was a byproduct of the injection molding process. The TV looks attractive enough, but it doesn't look particularly upscale. The bezel is a little chunky and the stands are a little plain. Unlike some TV sets, the ports are all located on one panel - you'll want to check the pictures if you are going to wall mount the set. The power jack is on the other side, and (as I noted above) you may need another cable, depending on your installation. I don't know who still uses composite video, but there's a non-standard composite jack on the panel, requiring an included adapter tail. The setup wizard is one of the better ones in the industry, IMO. The opening consists of some localization questions, as well as some network setup steps. Unfortunately, the next step requires you to create a Roku account (it's possible it won't do this if you don't enable ANY networking, but I didn't do that). Fortunately, you don't have to link a credit card to the account. On up, it's quick to enumerate your connected devices, add Roku apps, and use your TV. If you're already a Roku user, I think much of the setup comes in automatically from your linked account. The picture quality is typical for a 4K VA panel, which is quite good. The backlight uniformity and light leakage is above average for the price point. The image and video adjustment options are "easy", but not very powerful if you were hoping to calibrate your TV. Fortunately, the base calibration is decent (if a bit too heavy on green). The sound quality is so-so. The downward-firing speakers are about average for TVs of this type, which is to say that they're dreadful. At least dialogue is intelligible, so that's a plus. The HDMI ARC (HDMI3) works, so you can easily attach the TV to an ARC-supporting receiver or soundbar (ick).ConclusionThis item is a refurb, so you are definitely getting good value at the price. Since reliability is an unknown, and the warranty is so short (90 days?), you may want to get the add-on warranty from Amazon (I did). As a TV or aux monitor, this TCL is a good, large set... for the money. Recommended
