Works out-of-the box. The user interface actually works a lot better than the (tru) SDX transceiver I bought fully assembled, but the (tru)SDX comes with an older version of the firmware. With this unit, the software will not display the version number, and there appears to be no way to upgrade the software, so it must be considered a "black box" or "brick". Also, settings you make are not stored with this unit (unless I find a solution) at power-down. This can be mildly annoying.I wish I could be specific about the actual builder, but those links are hard to resolve. You might buy a unit that looks exactly like this one, but was built by an entirely different company, and may have design variations. So, buyer beware! YMMV. This unit was low cost, but shipped from China (not warehoused in the US for shipment by Amazon), so the delivery time was much longer.Build quality, from the outside, is surprisingly good. Couple this with RELATIVE ease-of use, and this becomes a fun to use, practically disposable rig to take with you into the harshest of situations or environments. If you break it or drown it, just buy another. However, there are some things that aren't clear from vendor photos: the front panel is made out of PCB stock. It will wear quickly. The bezel for the display is a thin film of plastic; not the kind intended to be removed when unboxing a device. This too will wear quickly and will be difficult if not impossible to clean.Sound quality was not great, but better than the (tru)SDX for comparison. The quality of reception, tuning, and transmission was high. Making contacts on this rig is certainly doable, and fun! As always, I recommend using a naturally resonant antenna if humanly possible to get the best results. So far, most of the operation with this rig has been on the 10 meter band with a dipole. Some contacts made on 20 meters with a compromise vertical.You do need an Amateur Radio License to transmit with this unit in the United States.My review is based on CW operations only. I will update this review, so check back!

This is alot of value for what it costs. There is refinement needed. There will be pops and strange sounds while manipulating the menus. And the thing just randomly freaks out and display goes bonkers. But a power restet always clears the issue. But the thing is, it does actually work! I've made contacts. For a ham with a very limited budget this little radio can get you on 8 different ham bands in sideband and CW modes! Quite cool if you ask me. Engineering marvel! With some refinement I'd give it 5 stars!
