The inner material is almost like a felt styrofoam, but the material holds the pins just fine! The back also comes with hanging mounts if you want to hang them!

So I’m not big on enamel pins, but through different product promotions and collector’s editions of various media, I’ve come across a rather sizeable collection of different pins and decided to do something so they aren’t getting lost in different crevices in the house. I landed on this case because it looked nice and seemed about the right dimensions for the number of pins I have, I thought it might make for a nice little display. The first thing I noticed upon opening the package from Amazon was that it was in a rather bland and cheapy box, like maybe it was a return. Ok, not a HUGE deal. The next on the item itself was the glass was smeared with streaks and fingerprints, someone definitely handled this directly and without much care, there were minor scuffs and abrasions as well but nothing too noticeable unless you were looking in the right light. Even more annoying, not a dealbreaker yet. Opening up the case, for the price it is I expected a little more premium on the materials but it’s literally just a cheap, thick foam pad with black felt sheet glued onto it. Ok, whatever, no one will notice it once its closed and displayed. But now the big issues, I had so much headache trying to attacks the pins with their backings. You have to be really careful as the pins are a shorter length than thickness of the foam, you basically have to mangle the sheet trying to push the pin out carefully as to not poke yourself making the pin visible, and in some cases end up poking yourself anyway. The sheet ended up bent and warped as careful as I was trying to be. I started noticing some of the pin backings around the table, I thought maybe they fell off of some of the pins I hadn’t attached yet, but nope… the foam was pushing the pins apart. Ok, maybe I’m not locking it in tight. I had to squeeze them in tight, further warping the felt sheet, and as I tried attacking more pins, more backings were falling off. At this point I was getting more frustrated, I thought maybe I had some pins with weak or loose backings, but when I reattached them outside of the pad, they were pretty tight. The pad is too thick to hold these. I tried putting in a few pins and hung it up and left for work. When I got back home, the pins had fallen off the padding so at this point I’ve had enough and decided to return this case, it’s not worth the money and I’m looking for an alternative.

I purchased this to hold my large collection of tie tacs and tie pins (I have to wear a necktie at work, so I've got lots of pins). The removable foam base is ideal for straight pins and is about one-half an inch thick (13mm). When the lid is closed, there is about three-quarters of an inch (19mm) space between the top of the foam and the bottom of the glass lid, so it can hold pretty bulky pins. The case isn't particularly fancy, but is a good value and gets the job done.
