Ok so I went with this unit because I was upgrading my desktop and also upgraded my hard drive to a solid state drive. Last time I did it back in the day I had to have software and the proper set up. Units that performed the function that this one does were expensive because they were only used by professionals. Plug and play right out of the box and the cloning process went extremely quick, I was expecting all day. I hooked it up in the morning and left to run errands and it was done by lunch. I converted a 7200 RPM 1 TB Seagate HDD to a Samsung 1 TB SSD. There are two points that I will make on this unit for anyone buying it and a shorthand process of using it as a stand-alone cloning device.Issue #1 - There is a misrepresentation on these units (this one and competitors) as to what your source and target drives can be. They state that your target must be BIGGER than your source. Not true, really. They can be the EXACT same size drive. Doubtfully, most people probably don't have their hard drive at 100% capacity so it is unlikely that if partitions are remotely different sizes by a few bytes nothing will get "cut-off" in your data stream. If someone is at 100% capacity on their hard drive or remotely close they're probably upgrading their size anyways so the point is moot.Issue #2 - The instructions on line 5 aren't exactly accurate. It reads, "Press the OTG button until both the blue Source and Target HDD lights flash. Then release the button. (Cloning process is now ready)" and that isn't how the unit responds. The target slot is closest to the front and the source slot is in the rear of the unit. (The front being where the button and lights are.) Before you plug the unit into the wall for power, insert and fully seat both drives in the proper location. The hard drive you're going from (source) and the one you're going to (target). Do not force them to seat, this should be a smooth process just make sure they're properly lined up. With both hard drives seated, plug in the unit and power on the switch in the back. Now, this is the inaccurate part, it says the source and target lights will flash when you hold down on the button, not true. Upon powering it up, you will see a red light at the top under power, and the source and target lights should be solid blue. When you hold down on the button (5 seconds roughly) the percentage lights on the bottom half of the ring will flash and the top half of the ring will remain solid. The lights will only flash for so long. So hold down the button, as soon as the lights start flashing release the button, then press and release it one more time while the lights are still flashing. This will start the process. The lights will flash on the progress ring and when it is solid and there are no lights flashing, the process is done. Turn off the main power switch and unplug it. You're reading to connect your upgraded hard drive.Hope this helps somebody, the unit performs as it should. I am writing the review on the computer I converted the hard drives on. So far no problems. If that changes I will come back and edit my review. Happy cloning!

Works well. Watch YouTube for better instructions. For the price this gets the job done and the build quality is good.

They bill this as a offline cloning dock but it also works just fine as a dual slot dock for a computer. I was a little skeptical about buying it given the relative price to the competition, but given the price I thought it would be worth a gamble. Fortunately the gamble paid off.I am adding USB-C to my older workstations so the accessories for the workstation work with new laptops, motherboards, and vice versa. To that end, I already have a Startech eSATA dock which is very similar to the Startech USB-C variant. The main difference between this unit and the Startech USB-C dock is the ejector buttons for the drives, and where they place the power and clone buttons and lights. Personally, for 3x the amount of money, having an ejector button wasn't exactly a good value proposition to me. The box itself is pretty much as tough, and as cheap, as the Startech one.Drives go in easily enough by shoving them in; you simply have to yank them out to remove them. Honestly, with the ejector buttons, I always found that full 3.5 HD's would pop up like toast, and just settle right back in anyway due to their weight. It's not like they latch in place or anything.I hooked this dock up to a Aukey USB-C card (see separate review) and also a MSI GS63VR laptop. Both picked up the unit and attached drives without much fan fare. A small red lamp lights at the top of the ring showing power - something the images don't show. You will get a blue light to the left and right also indicating a communicating source and target drive (the foremost drive). These lights occupy the 270-315 degree and 45-90 degree area around the ring. The entire bottom half of the ring is dedicated to four more quadrants that light up during a clone operation. When accessing the drives, the corresponding drive light blinks. I have no idea how one would get the pretty solid blue glow ring shown in the pictures.Pretty lights aside, the operation via PC is simple. Jam in a drive and access it. You can pull the drives out without the controller or device squealing, or setting off alarms like you typically get with eSATA cards and docks. In essence, it sees it as a USB dock. However, the device is seen as a single dock, so if you try to eject it using the Windows 10 OS 'Safely Remove Hardware' task bar icon, the only option available is to eject the entire dock. You cannot simply eject a single drive. That said, Windows didn't seem to mind if I simply pulled one out. It appears to treat the drives as un-cached and hot-swappable.Cloning a drive from one to another is about as hard as putting both in the dock, and pressing the button which is the middle of the ring. The unit need only be plugged in; it doesn't need to be attached to a computer. If you do attach the dock to a computer, they do provide rudimentary software to backup a drive. However, when I launched it in Windows 10, it did not show bare drives. The volumes must be mounted and accessible. Therefore, you couldn't use a Windows PC with this software to clone, say Linux drives or MacOS drives. Using something like Paragon Hard Disk Manager would solve those problems, and is the app I use and recommend for wiping and cloning drives.Overall I think this dock is a good value. It is priced reasonably and I honestly don't know why the Startech one costs so much. Right now, there aren't a lot of options with USB-C connections, which may explain the Startech pricing model. The limiting performance factor will be the drives, not the USB bus, so it's not like you will get killer performance from this dock that you couldn't get with an eSATA dock. However, as more and more laptops and motherboards come with USB-C, it makes this a very nice and compatible box that works on numerous systems and does have the performance advantage if you are using very high performance SSD's or something capable of pushing that limit (1,250 MBps). A Samsung 830 SSD drive was able to reach about 330 MBps for example. In summary, I would recommend this drive if you, like me, need to regularly configure, clone, and wipe, hard disks and SSDs with multiple systems.

The "offline" cloning function works! I couldn't clone my HD to a hybrid SSD drive because the cloning software (TrueImage) doesn't support either full or hybrid SSD drives so I bought this to try and see if it will work. And it does! My desktop computer now boots and loads programs so much faster than my old performance conventional HD. I haven't tried it as a USB drive interface yet since I'm waiting for a cable with the USB-A type connector (this USB-C 3.1 connector is for newer computers; mine doesn't have this connector).**UPDATE**Just a week after using it, the power adapter died. Contacted manufacturer and hope to have this resolved soon. The docking station works fine when I used another 12V adapter I had lying around so just a bad power adapter.** New Update**I just received the replacement from the vendor and the power adapter works fine so all is well. Due to the excellent customer service, I'm raising them back up to 5 stars, which they truly deserve!
