Appears to be a sound product, but I am a little skeptical about the claimed transfer rate.

I got speeds between 40 MB/s and 55 MB/s while copying a few 1GB files to this USB drive from a WD Caviar Black 1TB in Windows 7/64 bits. There was a problem at first. I already had a drive of the exact same model working fine with this PC. The new drive refused to show up in Windows Explorer. The Disk Management applet in Control Panel showed it, with an icon near it and this tooltip: "This disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk".It turns out that both USB drives came from the factory with the same signature and Windows 7 can't handle this. Microsoft was wrong to make this a fatal error. WD was wrong to miss this in testing - they were supposed to know about it and assign a random number to each drive to work around it. What, they never expected a customer to buy 2 identical drives? Here's what I did to fix it:Click the Windows start menu, type cmd, right click the "cmd.exe" item that appears at the top of your menu, click the line "Run as administrator"Type these commands:diskpartlist diskLet's say your new drive shows up as "Offline Disk 5". Type these commands:select disk 5uniqueid diskLet's say you got a bunch of hex digits like 0004536A4 or whatever. Type this:uniqueid disk ID=0004536A5That is, change the existing id to something slightly different so it doesn't conflict with the id of your other drive any more.Close the DOS prompt, disconnect the USB drive and reconnect it again. If it wasn't for this behavior, I'd give it 5 stars. My other drive (same model) has been working well for months after all. It doesn't get hot, it doesn't make noise.Update (Sep 2012).This time I bought a WD 3TB drive. (For some reason Amazon's site is unable to distinguish between the 2TB model and the 3TB model and it puts all the reviews together, making a mess.)I was a bit worried about the 3TB part, because my ancient computer runs XP 32 bit (SP3) and I knew there was a limit at 2 TB. Well, somehow the thing worked. I plugged it in, did NOT install any drivers or any software, it just worked. It showed 2.72 TB free (which is about 3,000,000,000,000 bytes and allows WD to shamelessly claim 3 TB, LOL). I could copy about 12 GB to the external drive and read it back without any problems.

The WD My Book Essential 3.0 1 TB is great for those who've been wondering if they wanted a USB 3.0 drive for their desktop PC. With its superfast performance the drive will significantly alter your expectations for external hard drives. Costing about $88.99 for the 1TB version buying from Amazon.com and about $125.00 for the 2 TB version; the My Book Essential 3.0 is about $50 more expensive than its USB 2.0 counterpart, however, I feel it's difference is well worth it. If you have a PC desktop and are looking for a simple external hard drive, look no further than the Western Digital My Book Essential 3.0. I have been using the WD My Book Essential 3.0 1 TB since receiving it on 03/4/11 backing-up all my personal data files approx sixty-five (65) times, they are very large (over 12,000 mp3 & photos alone) without any tribulations. The Western Digital 3.0 ran flawlessly with a noticeable difference in speed compared to my old 2.0 USB external drive. I also have run numerous virus and malware prgrams through the device without any difficulty. I also recognize I used this product approx. sixty-five (65) times backing up my data files without any problems, will it continue to be reliable in the future, time will tell.Update: 12/06/11...Still backing-up all personal data very well without any problems at all!!!Design and FeaturesThe WD My Book 3.0 is a no-frills storage device. It has a straightforward design with one tiny white light on its front that serves both as the power and activities indicator and on its back it only has a Mini-USB 3.0 port. The drive is bundled with a Mini-USB 3.0 cable, a power adapter, built-in software and a well-illustrated quick-setup poster. Even without the quick-setup poster, it's very easy to set up the WD My Book 3.0. Just connect it to a computer using the included USB cable, plug in the power, and turn it on. After installation, the hard drive is instantaneously available to the computer and is preformatted using NTFS file system. For those who have older desktop PC's with only 2.0 USB ports (2.0 USB ports designated by the color "White" - 3.0 USB ports designated by the color "Blue") you will have to purchase a USB 3.0 PCI Interface Card and install it in your computer before you are capable of utilizing the 3.0 speed.
