This isn't my first V-mount battery, there are plenty of other V-mount (and possibly a Gold mount) batteries lurking about here. So, if I were to say "This is my new favorite V-mount battery", like, straight off the starting blocks, that would be saying something, wouldn't it? Yes, it would. Let's take a look at what makes this V-mount battery from ZGCINE so...frankly essential...for your gear bag. And I'll even point out a few things that may make you want to pass.To get the simpler points out of the way, let's talk about available connections. This comes with 2 USB C ports (both are out, one is also a charging input), which none of my older V-mount batteries have. This is a nice feature, but not exclusive to the ZGCINE X99, as some other newer V-mount batteries have this.It also has only 1 D-tap. This is unusual for older V-mounts batteries, but once again becoming more common on some of the newer models. But, in addition to the D-tap and the 2 USB C's, it also has an 8.4V out and a 12V out. How nice that I can plug my LP-E6 battery eliminator directly into the 8.4v output on this ZGCINE, bypassing the need for my V-mount power adapter plate. And frankly, anything that lets me potentially delete a piece of gear I have to drag along (ahem, V-mount power adapter plate, which does nothing other than make my older V-mount batteries useful) is a benefit in my book.I will say that my 1 other V-mount battery, the newer one I own, also has the same connector configuration as this one. And, of course, being a V-mount battery it has the obligatory V-mount connector, which is yet another way you can charge this besides via the USB C port. Oh, and you can also charge this via the D-tap charge port. And I am happy to report, that I was able to successfully charge this battery with not only my double V-mount charger, but also the USB C cable AND my D-tap charger.I'd also like to take a second to hit on the V-mount of this battery. Remember when I spoke earlier about eliminating pieces of equipment to drag along? Unlike my older V-mount batteries, the V-mount on this battery has both 1/4" and 3/8" threaded holes you can use to mount this...well, anywhere. Like, toss a ball-head clamp on a C-stand and screw this the ball head clamp and use this to run your mono or strobe. Having an option to mount this BESIDES using just a V-mount really expands its capabilities and makes it useful for folks that might not have V-mount gear in their kit yet. You don't NEED a V-mount charger and power plate and so on to use this. You can screw this on a stand and plug the D-tap into your mono and be off to the races.Photographers love to minimize equipment when we can. Because we typically carry SO MUCH OF IT, lol. While I'm on the physical attributes, I'd like to talk a second about weight. This is the heaviest V-mount battery I own in the 95-99wh class. And not by a little. The 2nd heaviest V-mount battery I own tips the scales at 536 grams. This tips the scales at a whopping 604.2 grams. So, in no uncertain terms, this is NOT a lightweight battery. Remember when I said I'd mention reasons you might want to pass? If every last gram of weight matters to you...these are not the lightest V-mount 99's on the market. If you're a gram shaver, you may want to consider if these are worth their weight penalty. Now, most of us won't care about 50 or 60 extra grams of weight, because for most of us these will hang on C-stands in the studio or be on video rigs so heavy you won't even notice the weight. But on the bright side, those extra grams bring better electronics and, possibly even better batteries...time will tell on that, though.Speaking of better electronics, I saved the best part for last. Let's talk a bit about that WONDERFUL display screen, and just what information it actually gives you, and why it's so darned useful. The display screen tells you exactly EVERYTHING that's going on with the battery. And I mean everything. Obviously, it displays the battery percentage left, everyone can see that part. But then it just keeps getting better. First, it tells you if you have power coming in, and it also tells you how MUCH power is coming in. Why is this useful? First, it allowed me to discover a bad USB C cable. I had one USB C cable that would only charge this battery at 500mA. That's not right. Boom right away it helped me troubleshoot a bad USB cable. But that's not where the usefulness ended. It also allowed me to see which charging method was giving me the best charging performance. My double V-mount charger was delivering only 1 Amp per side. I had one USB charger that would max out at 3 Amps. My D-tap charger maxed out at 3 Amps. But I had one USB charger that would do 4 Amps! So guess which setup I use from now on to charge this super fast?So it shows you a LOT coming in, informationally and diagnostically. But what does it show you going out? Even more. First, there's an indicator for everything that has an active connection. When I plug this onto my V-mount power plate, it sits there until I actually turn the switch on the power plate on. Then the BP (Battery Pack) lights up, giving me a positive visual indication that my V-mount power plate is turned on and connected properly. If I hook things up to my power plate and begin to draw power, it tells me how much is going out in watts and volts, as well as remaining battery voltage. If you have something connected to one of the USB ports, it lights up. The 8.4v or 12v? Ditto. Oh, and it even tells you the TEMPERATURE OF THE BATTERY. Are the batteries overheating? You'll know that now, LONG before it happens. Because you can watch it on the screen. How can 1 V-mount battery provide you with SO much information? Frankly, I find it a bit incredible. And ridiculously versatile. This has virtually eliminated the need for a V-mount power plate, in many situations. Very nice.So there are only a few reasons to not want this in your gear bag like, right now. It's a little heavier than some V-mount 99's, and it only has 1 D-tap onboard. But then it gives you so much more in return. USB C ports. 8.4 & 12V ports. 1/4" and 3/8" mounting points. More information than the avionics system of an F-15 fighter jet can deliver. Ok, maybe that's a bit of a push. Close, though. Very close. If you're looking for a modern V-mount with all the bells and whistles...and I mean lots of bells and whistles...this thing is the boss. I can see this going in lots of gear bags. I, for one, very much recommend picking a few of these up. 5 stars.
