I bought this machine last season and used it HEAVILY at my house. We bought a property with a pool so many days we had 10 plus kids ripping around along with parents and without fail they would ask for snow cones once they saw the monster that we had on the counter. This is no snoopy snow cone machine, this is a legit ice SHAVER which provides everything from a silky smooth ice like gelato to a fast, rougher cut to just get high volume through the machine to make as many as fast as possible. I really wanted to replicate a snow cone like I had in Hawaii and I feel like this product gets you pretty dang close. I will provide links for all the supporting products that I purchased along the way over these last 15 months.Tips:#1 It is TALL, it would not fit on the space between countertop and cabinet uppers at my house. If you have an open counter with no cabinets above then you are golden. Please note the picture shows the auger/screw fully depressed. It extends out above the already tall unit when you spin the grip wheel up to accommodate your ice block. I ended up getting a small folding table from Costco and using a smoker BBQ cover to protect the unit on my back porch for this season. Working great so far.#2 Freeze your own ice, we keep about 4 buckets in rotation. These ones have held up like champs. You could go with something a little taller if you really wanted but I wouldn't bother unless you were going more light commercial use#3 Use a high quality syrup concentrate and make your own simple syrup. I used Ralph's snow cone syrup concentrates (go to their website and pick your own 12 pack of over 100 flavors 1 bottle made 1 gallon of syrup I would do it 1 quart at a time, 2 Tbsp concentrate = 1 quart syrup). I linked one pre-made flavor just so you have the name/brand. Do NOT buy pre-made syrups from Amazon, it is just too dang expensive to ship heavy quarts of liquid.#4 If you are having a party with a bunch of kids, Smart and Final has like 8 flavors in quart pour bottles that aren't amazing but its nice to have the extra bottles to re-fill with the good stuff. I think the price was about $2 for a quart. They also have the gallon jugs and pump nozzles. Also best place to buy spoon straws.#5 Buy speed pour spouts!#6 I found an ice chipper wasn't really needed. The buckets I linked have a smooth bottom which goes down on the brass plate, the rougher top was handled fine with the spikes on the spinning plate, just make sure to give it a good whack to set the teeth in the ice before turning it on. Also let the ice sweat for like 10 minutes to make sure nothing is gonna stick#7 Always back the blade down to 0 before turning it on and slowly adjust to a deeper cut. Always use the plastic safety cover because sometimes your block will crack and a big ol chunk WILL be flung out, especially towards the end of your block#8 Get a squeeze bottle of sweetened condensed milk, just do it. Coconut cream drizzle if you are feeling really spicy. A scoop of vanilla ice cream at the bottom of your cup works great too.#9 If you are going to use this at a carnival or commercial operation then go to harbor freight and get a $15 foot pedal switch. Upgrade the switch if you are going to use it hard but I don't think this unit would be good for aggressive, professional use.#10 I found a plastic popcorn bowl that fit below the blade perfectly, the yellow dish below isn't really good for much, it is removable/washable#11 Enjoy being the awesome house that all the kids want to play at!LINKS:Buckets: Ice Chipper: Speed Pourer: Cover:Syrup:

This thing is great! Produces lots of very finely shaved ice just like the machines costing 5-10 times what this machine costs. Mine came with the plastic safety guard and I do use it and it has saved me twice from getting thumped by a big chunk of ice while learning how to use the machine and properly make the ice. I also highly recommend getting a foot switch so you can have your hands free and be able to shut the machine down just by stepping back. The machine has a very sharp blade and some very sharp spikes so you have to be careful. Don't let the kids mess with this machine! Clean up is a breeze as you just dry everything off with a clean towel (be careful of the sharp blade and spikes!).Making the ice was more difficult than I had expected but with some research and trial and error I have a simple but effective process. You need a plastic bucket made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) of around 3/4 to 1 gallon size. Interior dimensions should be 7 to no more than 8 inches wide at the bottom and no taller than 6 to 7 inches. You want the ice to freeze from the sides and bottom with the top freezing last. Tap water works fine. Pour the water into the bucket to within about 1-1/2 inches of the top. I cut 2 circular pieces of pink wall foam board to just fit inside the top of the bucket. Wrap those in plastic wrap so the foam doesn't come into contact with your water and place on top of the water in the bucket. Put the bucket in the freezer for 24-36 hours depending on the temp of your freezer. I tried experimenting with the freezer temp but it didn't seem to matter as along as it was below +10 degrees F.Once the ice is frozen solid remove the bucket from the freezer and carefully use an ice/chocolate chipper (6 prongs with a rubber handle for grip) to chip the top of the ice flat and level. Brush the chips from the ice and let it sit a room temp for 15 minutes or so until the ice can be easily removed from the bucket.Place the ice in the machine with the very smooth bottom side down. If the ice is still really cold it may stick to the brass plate for a few minutes till it warms a bit. Center the ice in the machine by evenly aligning it with the spike plate. Use light pressure to make the spikes bite into the ice. You must have the ice reasonably centered in the machine or it will shake and wobble. For safety always have the blade completely retracted when inserting or removing an ice block and when cleaning the machine.Put the safety guard in place. To shave ice start the machine (I highly recommend getting a foot pedal) and then slowly adjust the blade until it just starts shaving ice. The shallower the blade goes into the ice the finer the ice will be. Just a little practice and you can quickly get it where you want it with each use. Now you are shaving ice to compete with the best of the shave ice shops out there. I use a container to catch my ice in when making just a few but shave directly into flower cups for parties and get-togethers when I need to make 12 or more at a time and run an assembly line with help. One block of ice will make 6-10 servings depending on the size of your cups.Use a quality syrup. I like the syrups from Hawaiian Shaved Ice (Mary Mac's). The pourers that just push into the bottle opening make it much easier to control the syrup and get an even pour. For adding cream flavor to a shaved ice serving I've found that melted vanilla ice cream is a much better taste than sweetened condensed milk or evaporated milk. To go over-the-top put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the bottom of the cup before adding the shaved ice and syrup then top with the melted vanilla ice cream.

This ice shaver is amazing and fits my needs!!! There are some problems here and there but overall this is a awesome machine for the jawbreaking price!! I have a small business and it works superb!! One minor issue is if you don't have a perfect straight block of ice, the clamps on the top will shift the ice if there's only 3 or 2 pins spinning the ice. The shipping took a long time because it's heavy. Plastic is very durable and steady. Another problem is that the crank to clamp the ice was very loose so you may need to put lock tight or gorilla glue to secure that in. The adjustment knob is pretty hard to turn, especially when your trying to make it so that the blade does not touch the ice. The ice comes out super fine and fluffy! This is a great Machine made by a great company!! A job well done :)

First off, this machine is huge. From the images, I didn't think it would be as big as it is. I mean, I knew it would be large, but not this LARGE. So, it's going to sit in our pantry or garage when stowed away. The packaging is not great. Mine came in a not of high quality cardboard box. The metal cap that connects to the handles was actually sticking completely out of the box, perhaps due to rubbing through the cardboard. Thankfully, the metal bits on this machine are of commercial quality...nothing was physically damaged. As other reviewers mentioned, this machine comes out of the box with a bit of dust, grime and oily hand prints over the metal parts. I spent quite some time cleaning it with soap and water. The plastic is not of very high quality, and in appearance, looks used. But, I doubt the machine was used, and instead, the plastic is just cheap and not properly stored before it's sent off to the assembly line. Now, the good part. It makes bonafide shaved ice. The real deal. It's soft like angel's wings, and super fluffy and airy. I bought some cheap syrups here on amazon to give it some taste tests, and the quality of the ice was absolutely wonderful (not the syrups...they were horrible). Everything everyone has said about it here in the reviews section are not sugar coating it. It's amazing. Also, there is a TON of metal grease all over the moving parts. You will need to remove some excess, or spread it around. Now, I found a couple tricks about the not so great things on this machine that many reviewers have complained about.1. Rubber feet are not of good quality. Falls off the base of the frame if slightly moved.FIX: So, the quality of the rubber feet is not really an issue. They are made of good thick rubber, but the design is the flaw. They do not hold at all to the base of the machine because there is no grab to the plastic. This results in the feet falling off fairly easily when the machine is only slightly moved. My fix for this was to use healthy dabs of Shoe Goo to the inside of the rubber feet before attaching to the housing. I used a plastic serving knife to get the thick gunky goo all the way inside. Then, I simply stuck the feet on to the machine. It dried fairly quickly and worked absolutely perfect. Hell, it worked so well, I may even patent the idea, ha! We have our machine setup on the kitchen island, and the darn thing barely moves at all now. And when I say barely, I mean almost no movement whatsoever. Be wary though, Shoe Goo has a strong chemical smell throughout the drying process. It goes away after a day or two.2. Ice breaks apart when I place it on the metal disk.FIX: Well, not really the problem of the machine. The large aluminum disk that the ice sits is machined and about 1/4" thick. Because of this, the thermal conductivity is fairly high. If the machine is sitting in your garage, or somewhere warm, the extreme shift in temperature to the ice block will cause it to crack. To remedy this, simply cover the top of the disk with a handful of cubed ice from your freezer and allow it to melt. It should be ready to go by the time your ice block has sweated a bit. .3. My machine wobbles too much and the ice block looks like it is about to spin out of control.FIX: Again, not a problem with the machine. If you did my rubber feet fix and it's still wobbly or shaking a lot, then you're ice block is most likely not properly leveled. Your ice block needs to be leveled on the top and bottom by chipping away at any excess ice that is causing it to not sit completely flat on the disk. If not leveled properly, the ice will wobble and perhaps even fly off resulting in a potential safety hazard. If you don't have an ice pick, grab a pairing knife or small 3" knife. Sit the ice block on the plastic yellow drop plate that was included with the machine. If the block is not standing up straight then it needs to be leveled by chipping away on both ends until it's completely flat. It may not be perfect, but the more level it is, the smoother it will rotate on the machine. I personally use a small paring knife to do this. I place the block of ice on it's side and hold the side down firmly with my non-dominant hand, and gently chip away excess ice with the other. Be quick about it...that ice is COLD!Other than that, the machine works wonderfully and creates beautiful shaved ice. At this price, it truly is a no-brainer. Even if you only use it during the hot summer or special events, it is still worth it in my opinion.

I love this machine! I waited and did a lot of research before I bought this machine. I really love it. It is heavy duty! Not a toy for sure! I've only had it a couple of weeks, but so far so good. I've used it several times and I LOVE it! Makes super soft snoooow! Just like I wanted. I don't like the little balls of sno cone ice. I wanted real snowy snow! This machine does it! I freeze my ice chunks in a 2 or 3 qt sauce pan over night. Works perfectly. Run water over the bottom of the pan and the ice slides right out.Another trick my husband figured out is to put the ice on the machine with the blade all the way in the down position. So it's not showing above the metal table the ice sits on at all. (This may have been in the directions that I didn't read :) ) That way when it first starts to spin there is no friction and you can bring up the blade to the correct shaving height very slowly to get the perfect shave on the ice.Otherwise between the blade and ice that may not be perfectly centered it may send the ice whirling....that can be a little scary at first. Not that the ice goes flying or anything...but the noise it makes can make you jump!! At least it did me!Have a bowl or cup ready and pack that ice down as it comes out rather quickly. There is a tray to catch it on the machine. This baby kicks out a lot of shaved ice very quickly. From one chuck of ice 8" round x 6" High we got about 7 good size cups of shaved ice. Not those little 6oz sno cones cups...big drinking cups full of snow! So go for it and have fun!!Syrup is available at Target and in gallons at Smart & Final if your are close to one of those!
