These have been around from WWII Military times, and work just as well as they did then. Originally burned either Esbit or Trioxane (no more... Military wanted a less obvious blue flame rather than yellow). Esbit is still popular, and a 14g tablet will just boil a canteen cup of water (about 2 cups). Better versions of the stove come with a slide on small wind shield for one of the open ends - you can make one from heavy gauge cooking pan or pie pan Aluminum or Aluminum flashing material. Esbit or Alcohol burns with a "low flame velocity" (flame gets blown about by the breeze, making heating inefficient), so a windshield is a very good idea. If it's windy, another Esbit tab may be needed - and a good incendiary storm match may be needed to get tablets lit. Wind is a real problem for all stoves, especially Esbit, Alcohol, and Wood stoves without effective wind shielding. Each type of fuel has a "flame source to pot" optimal distance, and this is Ok for Esbit. For Alcohol, maybe a cat-can burner or small height stove with perlite is better than a Trangia, where flame may be too close to pot to heat efficiently. These are made in 3 sizes, I believe. The smaller is the standard/original; the medium is maybe better for larger pots/pans; the large is maybe a bit too big to be a "pocket stove".Put a handful of Esbit tabs into the stove along with good storm matches and a striker (and a clip-on windshield or two), and you have an emergency kit stove you can rely on many years from now.

I had always had one of these when I was a kid right up to adulthood. So I was excited to see one at a not bad price. So I got one. This thing is tiny! How your going to be able to put any type of fuel that could boiled a cup of water. So yup very disappointed! I can't see tis for anything more than is a small heater in a well ventilated way. Can do much more. Now I need to find a small feul source I can carry like the old ones. I don't even think it would be worth carrying for an emergency food cooking. I am going to keep it because I personally collect camping and hiking gear. It's kinda cute I guess. Oh and doesn't not come with feul or a carring bag. Something else that sucks. I will get a larger one.

Smaller than the original, fit better in pack.
